So pathetic. Beating up on a group with even less power than you so you can feel like a tough guy.
And it figures that The Atlantic would publish it.

Ok, but what is he going to do about it? All I hear is talk. Call up every police officer and start arresting ICE officers and charging them. DO SOMETHING.
The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.
And trans lives are grounded in reality.
We see y'all. No matter what.

THE CUT They Want the Shooter to Be Trans By Lex McMenamin, a writer and editor at Teen Vogue.
“Anti-trans harassment and violence is all the rage. Trans people are afraid to leave the country, let alone leave their houses. The right-wing ecosystem has gladly spent years creating these conditions, while Democrats have by turns avoided saying anything about them at all” 😞

“I think that as we get distracted by what’s coming out of the White House, it will be easier for folks to miss things that are happening [... locally]. We really need folks to know what’s going on in their own communities. If you see something that you don’t like, speak up, fight back.”
Resign and make way for someone with the guts to fight.
This better describes my previous institution than my current one, but I still see evidence of this around me every day.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.): "Elon Musk, you didn't create USAID, the United States Congress did for the American people." And Musk "doesn't have the power to destroy" USAID. "We're going to stop him."
"We don't have a fourth branch of govt called Elon Musk!" It's "illegal, unconstitutional."
You're failing to meet the moment. Express outrage loudly and unequivocally, or step aside for someone who will.
Yay! I look forward to this every year. It's great to read someone sharing things that make them happy, and I always find new things I want to watch/read/listen lo.
A white square with black text reading, “I remember in a recent interview you spoke about your support of the trans community, because you said: "I see that transgender youngsters are the ones who are helping to take planet Earth into the galaxy because we're going to run into other life forms that our gender does not matter." Can you speak about that a bit? I think the transgender kids are the bravest kids right now that we see; they're as brave as my generation was in breaking down segregation. They're breaking down —I don't have the word for it right now-but it's gender prejudice, and [the idea that] somebody has decided that they can tell you who you are, what your name should be, and how you should look.”
A white square with black text reading, “And those youngsters are saying, "No, I can decide who I am, what my name should be." Everybody's mad at me like, You should be a girl because we've decided you're a girl. And they say, "Well, who the hell are you?" I can decide that I'm a boy. And if it makes me happy, what does it mean to you? And I can decide that my name is John. And if you don't like that my name is Geraldine, why can't you name yourself? And if the people who know you and love you— or have to talk to you, maybe they don't even love you but they have to talk to you-you can tell them, "This is my name, and I would like to be referred to in that way."
A white square with black text reading, “But when we go into the galaxy, a life-form may say, "Who are you?" Well, there's no point in talking to another life-form and [saying] "I'm a boy or a girl," because it may have no meaning. That may mean nothing to them. So what you're going to say is, "I am a life form from the third planet, from the yellow sun," therefore giving yourself an identity. You don't have an identity because you say, "I'm a boy, I'm a girl, I'm a Jew or Gentile, I'm a Catholic or Baptist." That doesn't mean anything once you get beyond the prejudices of Earth. So yeah, I think the transgender students are really brave because they're taking a lot of flack for just wanting to be themselves and to have the right to have their own name. I think that's incredibly brave, and I think that they're absolutely right to want to do that. To want to own themselves.”
Nikki Giovanni staunchly supported trans folks, especially trans youth. Her encouragement is a balm.
“I think the transgender kids are the bravest kids right now that we see; they're as brave as my generation was in breaking down segregation.”

Elon Musk's harassment of random federal employees is alarming.
But it's also a sign of weakness. And a reminder that Timothy Snyder is right: don't obey in advance.

Obama's '08 campaign won the biggest margin of victory in the last 30+ years. Within hours of his inauguration, Republicans went to dinner and agreed to oppose him on every single item. Two years later, they won 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats.
You don’t abandon someone’s right to exist because it “doesn’t poll well” unless you’re a piece of shit
I’m not trans so maybe it’s not my place to say but:
If I was the only Black woman surrounded by dozens of people targeting me for harassment/segregation, I’m pretty sure I would say what Sarah McBride did and then I would hope dozens of my colleagues would stand up for me anyway.
The monumental grace that Sarah McBride is showing right now is astounding.
Tip for new BlueSky users: the "nuclear" block.
Blocking a user here is far more effective than it ever was on Twitter. It rips out all connection to replies, quotes, everything. They are erased from your life.
It's beautiful and I recommend using it generously.
It's really striking to see all these quotes lined up together (and worth reading; you'll probably recognize some, but not all.)
