But now he's gone from a judge, with all the power, influence, and respect that commands, to a guy who gets called in front of the City Council to get yelled at for alternatively not doing his job or doing it poorly. Wonder if he has any regrets about giving up the gavel.

Barnette was one of the most important judges in the state, as the Chief Judge of Hennepin County. While head of the Charter Commission, he paved the way for the government restructure consolidating all the City's operational power under Frey. This job was always intended to be a high-paid sinecure.
I have basically no disposable income right now, but I still support Taylor via Patreon bc there's no one at the publications in town doing what she can do.
Here's how good she is: I represented her in multiple cases filed by a crank political candidate last year and she's made money off of ME
I don't keep up with many these days because I had a bit of a break in my guest lectures. But I'll ask around!
Taylor is a personal friend, but I also really admire her boots-on-the-ground work as a 100% independent journalist. She pairs deep local knowledge and context with genuine curiousness in a rare way. Her report on a day in immigration court is a must read. Some of the details will floor you
report from the sd39 DFL convention, which felt like another harbinger of the unfavorable position angie craig is in for the endorsement as the newcomers activated to caucus by the minnesota ICE occupation are left-leaning and coming out strong for peggy flanagan

it's the hardest thing. we've been able to keep a lot of hard stuff from my son over the years, but he's 4 now and during the height of the ICE occupation he asked why some of his friends didn't come to school anymore. felt like the first time we couldn't protect him from the world.
I cannot imagine that @normcharlatan.bsky.social will stand for this Alex & Drew erasure
hell yeah
me, i don't have drafts, because there is no barrier between my thoughts and the post button. empty drafts folder, full heart.
a decade ago I saw someone tweet something like "if the apocalypse happens you'll all come on here to post something like 'it's over for you hoes'" so I guess it's time to empty the drafts. don't leave anything on the table.

the "don't email my wife" image altered to read "don't enable my wife"
it is incredibly corny. beyond cornball. but that has nothing to do with whether it's powerful or not. corniness is probably an asset in that regard
idk besides some real clunkers in there, talking about war in the east and astronauts in space is still pretty relevant 61 years later
maybe now we'll understand why our parents had deep emotional connections to cornball music like "Eve of Destruction"
but I would actually perish if I lived in the South during the summer. Midwest summers are tough enough. I ain't built for that
I can spend my money on fossil fuels or wool, and I can tell you which I prefer!!
Emotional guilt horse trading still gets you a decent horse!
I grew up without air conditioning, besides a year in college dorms I never had central air until I was 27. My brain is not formatted for cooling season.
being married rules, my marriage is a source of endless strength and joy, I do not really make jokes at my wife's expense, but it causes me physical class-based pain to see a "7" as the lead number on the thermostat
sure it's nice to be warm, but what if instead we let a slight chill nip at us as if to remind that the cold embrace of death ever awaits us, like the dark woods of New England taught me
the most difficult part of my marriage is that one of us grew up with a lower middle class relationship to the thermostat and acquiesced to living in a broiler early in the relationship, and now has to smile through sentences like "I turned it down to 70° last night"
As of March 18, Habeas Dockets is now part of a nonprofit: The Immigration Justice Transparency Initiative

thank you @reportermark.bsky.social for taking me to immigration court at whipple to observe. more people should be going if they can to witness the system up close

it's the Dormant Commerce Clause's time to shine, sadly
ORDER Based on the foregoing, and on all the files, records, and proceedings in this case, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that: Petitioner REDACTED's Petition for a Writ of Habeas Corpus (Doc. No. 1) is Release. Respondents shall immediately release Petitioner from custody.

It was a pleasure to speak to PaviElle and Sean about what comes next for the Twin Cities in the aftermath of the ICE occupation. Really thoughtful questions about housing, collective action, and my preferred delivery mechanism for breakfast potatoes.
