I'm still trying to make #cursedbinomialnomenclature and #blessedbinomialnomenclature happen, but I can't decide which one 'Ursos arctos' is.

I mean on the one hand, 'Bear bear' should be blessed, but 'Bear [Latin] bear [Greek]' feels pretty cursed.

Got bugs? Here’s how to catch the errors in your scientific software Computer scientists share their advice for ensuring that your scientific software does what it’s supposed to do.

“The idea behind code review is not to judge people, but to check for errors and explain coding best practices.”

Happy to be part of a recent piece that amongst other things, discusses code review:

AI everywhere in everything, and yet Word's grammar check still has no idea what a 'clause' is, and is constantly trying to get me to insert erroneous commas, or remove correct ones.

have there been similarly culturally pervasive “everyone needs to start using this tech right now” pushes over such a relatively brief time frame as we’re currently seeing with LLMs? (This is a very genuine question)

This is enraging. It is also far too common, especially here.

What's that? A vaunted local Asheville business just suddenly shut down, fired their workers and stole their pay? Again?

How old were you when you first heard about evolution?

The concept, not any particular mechanisms.

Lured the cat out of the dishwasher by jangling his favourite toy in the other room. Played for a sec, let him catch it, went to shut the dishwasher.

Cat came running up to put his paws on it like 🥺 and is now OUTRAGED at being BAMBOOZLED. Boy loves dishwashers more than @techconnectify.bsky.social

People have been shocked that an AI company is offering chats with an AI Jesus for $1.99/minute but it's important to remember and respect the fact that a core part of American evangelicalism is being financially defrauded by people who claim to speak for god

An mRNA treatment for PANCREATIC CANCER was in trials, among many other uses. Choosing to end this research is choosing to sentence millions to an early, painful death

You have more in common with the people of Iran than you do with anyone in this administration, any member of the technocracy, anyone who is profiting from this war, or any billionaire. When you see Iranians forming human chains outside key infrastructure sites, you should feel a sense of kinship.

I think not saying anything was a mistake. He murdered 200 school girls like three weeks ago. Literally say anything.

I understand the words they would say to explain why they did not say anything. But to stand in front of an American flag and participate would haunt me for the rest of my life.

I come to bluesky to post my little joke

I learn about Israel bombing a village

I learn about a jauntilly floating jar of space nutella

I learn about ICE sexually abusing a 3-year-old

I learn about US Republicans cheerleading war crimes

I see the desperate fundraisers

I read your little jokes

Me, joking: I can’t believe we chose “destroying the economy” and “losing wars” over “being nice to trans people occasionally”

Conservatives, dead serious: it was a tough choice, but I’m glad we picked “destroying the economy” and “losing wars” over “being nice to trans people occasionally”

We are so, so far away from rules and laws around how war is conducted meaning anything at all of any substance, and - unlike before - explicitly so. Quite a difficilt thing to actually think properly about for any length of time because it is extremely bad

A collective photo taken at Firestorm Books. Our team, including five humans and two dogs, is sitting on the sidewalk in front of the building looking relaxed. The sky is bright but cloudy and flags on the building hang without any indication of wind. The building is painted forest green and various posters and signs are visible in the windows, which reflect the sky. The largest reads "Immigrants Welcome."

Like a lot of small businesses in our region, Firestorm has been in financial distress for the last year. Hurricane Helene was our tipping point, but local cost of living increases, inflation, and higher occupancy costs are huge contributors. 1/9

57 of my fellow students were arrested, academically disciplined, and barred from campus 2 weeks before finals.

And then the visas of some of those students were quietly revoked.

And then the DEI office was killed.

And then we watched our mentors’ grants evaporate over “woke”.

I'd also add, as someone who was taught these same formulae in a very different setting, that it's not specifically a postcolonial style. It's literally just traditional formal writing tuition, though that now seems to be more common in former colonies than in the imperial core.
