Ah, the stuff in Why? about cosmic purpose goes beyond what Galen thinks. I just meant we have the same basic Russell-inspired panpsychist position.
but he is wonderful at capturing the view...I'll watch and see if I can learn anything!
I think it is just different ways of describing the same view. We use the word 'physicalism' in different ways, and this is mainly what we argue about (e.g. in his essay in 'Is consciousness everywhere', the volume that critiques me). Maybe you'd be interested in that essay and my short response
Cool! I still haven't had chance to watch...I *think* we have the same view (he was my PhD supervisor)...would be interested to hear what made more sense to you...
Sadly this is not something I have written or will ever write.
What better way to spend your Friday night in????

Yesterday I was really sad and today I'm really happy. Thank you for your attention in this matter.
I'm speaking at Mind at Large online conference 3pm this afternoon. Join us!
I take ONE DAY OFF and now there are too many comments for me to know where to begin…it’s going to be a late night…
We say there is a fine-tuning problem because if we tweak the values of the physical constants, life seems to become impossible. But what if we tweak the structure of the laws of physics instead? open.substack.com/pub/disagree...
There's room for debate. But I can state the important claim in a way that avoids the controversy.
Is Consciousness Physical?
I'm supposed to be on holiday but couldn't resist doing a little response to Skydive Phil

It's not always straightforward and there's lots to debate, but it doesn't seem to have any connection to being useful. I think it's a bit sad to confine the noble quest for truth to what's useful.
I don't see why we think there's any connection between truth and usefulness. We have a well developed way of understanding how evidence works, Bayesianism, we can just apply that.
I think it's a noble human endeavour to have our best guess as to what ultimate reality is like. Should be tentative and open to correction. Doesn't have to be useful.
Enjoying reading comments on this

What's the alternative?
Too much good stuff on YouTube!!! Excited to watch SkyDivePhil's latest video getting a range of top philosophers to defend physicalism, & @cosmicskeptic.bsky.social's latest video with my PhD supervisor Galen Strawson on panpsychism. I may do a Substack post on my reactions...
Is there any other question worth asking?
