I STOP WRITING THE POEM

to fold the clothes. No matter who lives or who dies, I'm still a woman.
Ill always have plenty to do.
I bring the arms of his shirt together. Nothing can stop our tenderness. I'll get back to the poem. I'll get back to being a woman. But for now there's a shirt, a giant shirt
in my hands, and somewhere a small girl standing next to her mother watching to see how it's done.

I always return to: Why in god’s name would you, a wonderfully intelligent, curious, beautiful human being with an infinite capacity for learning and a fathomless depth of interiority give up a single iota of your creativity to a chatbot that can neither think, nor feel, nor create? Have some pride

A Glorious and Unknown Place ~ by Stephanie Frazee The mermaid’s story is not her beauty. Her story is not creamy skin and lustrous hair, shell-smooth breasts unencumbered by gravity, small waist giving way to scaled hips. That is a story of fantas…

Nigel Thomson "On the Way Home from School" (1980)A surrealist painting titled "The Schoolgirl" by Jeffrey Smart. A young girl in a school uniform walking away from the viewer across a desolate, yellow field toward a dark-clothed man standing in the distance. The man is hunched, holding a long saw at waist-height, creating a sense of psychological tension and isolation against a stark, industrial horizon.

The more you look at the details more disturbing this painting becomes.

All of this. And I find I particularly recognise the 'vanquish insecurity'.
Ursula K. LeGuin pinpointed the 'unmeasured desire' for unassailable safety as one of the chief drivers of evil in the world.
And Christ, yes, I'm seeing it so much. In my personal life and in politics too.

A Cottony Fate

Long ago, someone
told me: avoid or.

It troubles the mind
as a held-out piece of meat disturbs a dog.

Now I too am sixty.
There was no other life.

After Minor Surgery

this is the dress rehearsal

when the body
like a constant lover
flirts for the first time
with faithlessness

when the body
like a passenger on a long journey
hear the conductor call out
the name
of the first stop

when the body
in all its fear and cunning
makes promises to me
it knows
it cannot keep
