The advocacy and work of accessibility continues, regardless of anti-DEIA.
But the work can be harder, less resourced, more diminished.
Oppressive systems weigh heavily on the advocates still advocating.
So if you can, take the weight off us by helping where you can, regardless of your job title.

How broken is today's frontend culture?
A friend points out that the median *mobile* page is now larger than a copy of DOOM (2.6 MiB vs. 2.48 MiB), the 75th percentile page is more than 2 DOOMs, and the P90 mobile page is 4.5x the size of DOOM:

up to 31m/s wind today and tomorrow 🚀💨
My hands holding a dunnock, a passerine with a brown/black striped back, gray/silver face with beige stripes around the eyes, red-ish eyes, and a black beak.
also if anyone's wondering why I've been real quiet on socials lately... been in bird banding training all summer/autumn in my spare time 🐦⬛💍 feels good to be contributing to science and be in research-oriented circles again 😌
pictured is a dunnock I ringed last week in Porsanger 🫶🏻
Starting my online workshop series on dataviz accessibility with @smashingconf.com next week ✨
We'll have interactive sessions, with theory, hands-on exercises, plenty of practical examples, and hopefully a lot of fun 🫶🏻

Great grey shrike in my hands, we have a matching outfit. The great grey shrike has a grey plumage, with black feet, black feathers that have a white horizontal band, and dark gray/lack stripe across the eyes. The tail is black and white as well. Wearing a metal ring on its left leg. I’m wearing a black and white and grey striped outfit.
My hands holding a rustic bunting: it’s a small bird with beige on the tummy, copper colour on the flanks and face. White/light beige stripe above the eyes, brown on top of the head. Wearing a small metal ring.
River with a wetland island in the middle, woods on the other side. On the foreground there’s a small row boat.
enrolled in bird banding training this summer, already got to band a fierce great grey shrike and a critically endangered rustic bunting.
This is along a river between Norway and Russia, so our group also got 45 Russian birds in our nets.
Excited to announce that I’m hosting a Smashing Workshop on dataviz accessibility this autumn!
Spread over 5 sessions, we’ll cover #DatavizA11Y fundamentals, and how to test, document, design, and develop accessible charts 📈

If your government is setting up concentration camps then you're the bad guys. It's remarkable that even needs saying in the 21st century.
i’m pretty sick of the world the computer guys have made
Big white tailed eagle sitting on lichen covered rocks, in front of the ocean. The eagle has mostly brown plumage, with white/beige feather tips. The head is mostly white with brown spots, and the tail (which is mostly hidden behind a rock) is white as well. The beak and feet are bright yellow/orange.
went out for a dog walk around town, met a cute small birdy
Microsoft is asking managers to consider usage of AI tools in performance reviews and is considering formal metrics around AI tool usage.
I don’t think usage of any tool, no matter how useful, has ever been a requirement to get a good performance review during my career. This is weird.

We do have midnight sun until the end of July though, when she’s not hidden by clouds ⛅️
Weekly weather forecast showing temperatures between 5°C and and 9°C, almost always cloudy, and wind up to 9m/s.
Summer 😌
A shouting black-legged kittiwake standing on top of a statue that’s meanwhile completely covered in kittiwake poop.
A red wooden building that’s falling apart, missing planks some places and paint scratched off on others, where there’s a big “make the north great again” sign, on which there’s a lot of kittiwakes nesting. There’s also a lot of kittiwake nests on the ledges of one of the boarded off windows. There’s also a poster hanging saying “fiskeridiktaturet, depresjon Finnmark” with an illustration of a mermaid pushing away two dead fish on it.
Moved to Vardø earlier this month, loving it so far ❤️
Screenshot of the weather app, showing it’s currently 1AM, 11°C and sunny. The hourly weather forecast between 1am and 6am shows sun, and temperatures between 10°C and 12°C. The daily weather forecast predicts mostly sunny, between 9°C and 15°C.
Back under the midnight sun ☀️
If you’re looking for actionable dataviz/web accessibility reviews, consulting or training, I have some availability opening up from October onwards 💪🏻
And! The work will be done from an island at 70°N, surrounded by whales, 100.000s of birds, and a lot of weather 💨🌊

A pride flag with every color band represented by a NASA image. White is Earth clouds, pink is aurora, blue is the Sun in a specific wavelength, brown is Jupiter clouds, black is the Hubble deep field, red is the top of sprites, orange is a Mars crater, yellow is the surface of Io, green is a lake with algae, blue is Neptune, and purple is the Crab Nebula in a specific wavelength.
I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️🌈💖

Our drive up north has started 😱
moving out: done ✅
tomorrow the (looong) drive to our new place starts, and then from next week onwards we'll be living in the northernmost part of Norway 🐋☀️
Earlier this year I had a @smashingconf.com meets talk about dataviz accessibility and several people in the audience asked if there were any workshops, so I’m very excited we could actually make it happen 🤩
