A bunch of mailers for the redistricting referendum in Virginia
So so SO many mailers for the Virginia redistricting referendum today!
Between that and a crazy number of texts it is basically impossible to escape.
They aren’t really targeted either. I’ve gotten a ton of it from both sides.

When they were on the road in California they practiced on a field where they had them to scare away geese.
They picked it up and turned it into a running gag!

Washington Spirit players Emma Gaines-Ramos and Rebeca Bernal walking out for training. Bernal is carrying Jose the decoy coyote, a new team good luck charm.
Jose the decoy coyote, standing looking out toward the training field from the sideline.
Good morning from Washington Spirit training, where Jose the decoy coyote has been brought out and is patrolling the touchline.

One thing I hate is that when I visit family in NJ and drive through Philly to DC, it’s usually Sunday/Monday when John’s is closed.
Good news is Little Sicily Pizza 2 is nearby and has that phenomenal Indian chicken cheesesteak as a consolation prize.

Maybe it’s b/c I saw them when I was a kid but I kinda liked the blue and orange pinstripe era.
Normally I like the garish and weird but I find the yellow/brown combo just kinda gross.
But I do looove the OG City Connect

[rockwell meme] the era it references was actually a lot better than the era they called back to for their primary jerseys.
Otherwise though, I agree!

Less my perspective than the league’s. The article mentions that the folks in favor believe it would be a slightly less competitive TV environment for playoffs in late spring v. fall. U.S. sports are also kinda dead in late Feb/early March.
I still don’t think it’s worth it, though.

This would work well in exactly four markets: Orlando, Houston, LA, San Diego.
Might help the rest with player access and help with TV a bit, but feels like it’ll be a hard sell for in-person crowds and would require a loooooong winter break.

Oh wait, not Congress but Pete Buttigieg played quiz bowl at St. Joseph's in Indiana, and they generally had very good, nationals-quality teams.
Tom Cotton played it too apparently, and then Chuck Schumer played It's Academic in HS, which is also similar.

The Texas Rangers have unveiled a controversial new statue modeled after Jay Banks, a former Texas law enforcement officer known for enforcing school segregation.
The unveiling preceded the MLB’s celebration of Jackie Robinson Day, which commemorates the first African American MLB player.

It’s Jackie Robinson Day, and I’m thinking not only of his legacy but about the man who he replaced, Big Ed Stevens.
He could’ve played the victim and helped segregationists by being the Riley Gaines of his day.
But to the day he died, he had nothing but respect for Robinson.
A model in allyship.

Looks like this year, MLB and its teams are mentioning the words “color barrier” and “Black,” but “racism” and “inclusion” have not made their way back in yet.

Sorry but it's me.
Going to ballgames and reading random b-ref pages aloud for fun is one of my favorite ballgame hobbies.
That and keeping score.

Oh yeah! There's no shortage of great names. Everyone from Ron Tugnutt to Janne Niinimaa to Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, and my favorite to say when I was a kid: Nikolai Khabibulin!

Son of all-time great NHL name Radek Bonk.
Although I do think Oliver Bonk is an even better name.
Only his first goal and he's already giving the likes of Hakan Loob and Jeff Beukeboom a run for their money!

Definitely a lot of parallels, but they have the advantage of European urbanism/walkable communities that we Americans don't often have.
(Thankfully more US cities are fixing this with stadiums in neighborhoods/downtowns, but fortunately for the Dutch, they don't have to sit in empty parking lots!)

No particular order:
NBA Street Vol. 2
MVP Baseball 2004 (2005 also great but 2004 may lowkey be better)
Madden 2004
And somehow, despite having only four songs... NASCAR Thunder 2003

Tailgating is uniquely American, and there’s a very specific reason for it
Tailgating centers around the automobile, and that’s why it’s likely to remain a uniquely American experience.
As a bonus, here is an explainer. Comes down to America's car-dominant culture and many stadiums having nothing walkable b/c of parking spots.
Imagine a football match without any pubs or restaurants within a mile of the ground. This is the American workaround.

Guessing it's a combo of security, keeping people from coming too early, and FIFA being FIFA and wanting to capture people's money.
People bring their own food & drink since massive lots make it so there are no bars/restaurants in walking distance. FIFA prob. wants to make people buy from them.

No coming early to the parking lot and setting up tents, barbecues, chairs, tables with food, beer, etc. around your car.
Very very common in the US, especially for pro and college American football.

If I lived ~3 hours from Olympic/the Hoh Rainforest, I would be there.
If you want to expand a bit to 4 or so, would also do Cannon Beach.

Just a few days after April 9th, the anniversary of when General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House.
Seems like a good way to honor the important, often overlooked fact that the United States of America won the Civil War and defeated pro-slavery traitors who hated freedom.
