i started writing a tumblr post about the musical motifs in the hail mary score and it's uhhhhh 1300 words long and i've only covered 4 out of the 7 i wanted to talk about

ok i knew that several of the tense, serious, high-stakes moments in the PHM score used a variation on Dies Irae but i just realized that the MAIN FUCKING THEME is a variation of it in a major key??????? what the FUCK this score is so smart what the fuck

i expressed a wish for more time in therapy bc i had more to talk about, and my therapist very gently and kindly reminded me that i do have more time, on the front end of the appointment, which i could avail myself of by not being chronically late 🙃🙃🙃

anyway. starting to feel like i might need to pull this technique back out for a little while for project hail mary. and i realized that i have a ready-made mental container if i do—i can picture it as a little xenonite canister :’)

the container i pictured was a little clam shell, something with an iridescent sheen. it felt like the essence of the show, in a way, so even just touching the shell made me happy. it was soothing

i think traditionally you picture putting it somewhere difficult to reach, with a lot of steps to get there. but what worked for me w/ ofmd was keeping it close by but tucked away. when i wanted to pull it out, i’d instead put my hand in my pocket & imagine rubbing my thumb over it.

often used for traumatic memories or difficult emotions, i think, but can be used for anything you’re struggling to set aside.

when ofmd s2 was airing i was so intensely excited about it that i could hardly think about anything else, so i started using a mental “containment” technique just to be able to function (where you picture yourself putting the thing away, and retrieving it when you’re ready to think about it).

now i’m thinking about him learning eridian speech on a keyboard and eventually graduating to theremin. getting better at hearing little intricacies and changes in intonation and what meaning they carry. or since the combo of notes carries meaning—singing and playing theremin at the same time!!

THEREMIN!!! okay i love this bc the action of playing a theremin is so expressive and organic so it’d be more natural for speech than a keyboard AND bc the sound of a theremin feels like it perfectly fits with the overall sound of the score and rocky’s speech LOVE THAT
