This World Health Day, we're celebrating the progress our scientists have made towards more effective treatments. The area around cancer cells is key to how cancers grow/become treatment resistant. scientists at University of Oxford can now predict the tumour environment: https://ow.ly/wlb150Yygpa
This month, we're working with Guts Charity UK to raise awareness of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Bowel cancer cells don't grow alone. They're surrounded/supported by other cells. Understanding how these different cells interact as tumours develop could give us vital information for treatments: bowelresearchuk.org/research-hub/identificat...
Bowel cancer survival rates are much higher the earlier the disease is diagnosed, so familiarise yourself with the symptoms π
If you experience any of these symptoms for 3 or more weeks, speak to your GP as soon as possible. Early diagnosis saves lives.

Being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis can be stressful, particularly in the first year. We don't know what causes this stress or what helps people cope with it.

We're incredibly sad to hear that Mel Schilling has died. We're keeping her family and loved ones in our thoughts at this difficult time. Mel died at just 54 years old, two years after she was diagnosed with bowel cancer. We desperately need more research to save lives. Donate now: ow.ly/2HYt50Yz0pz
Alice began feeling unwell at 14. At 18, her health collapsed. She was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and had developed a toxic megacolon. She had emergency surgery and now lives with a stoma. Over time, she was also diagnosed with psoriasis and several other inflammatory conditions.
Did you know around 1/4 of people living with an autoimmune condition will have more than one?

"I do believe it's good that I know I have Lynch syndrome because, without this screening, my duodenal cancer would have been missed or picked up much later..." Sam told us.
#LynchSyndromeAwarenessDay
When Sam tells people she has lynch syndrome, people often ask how she manages to get out of bed each morning. But because Sam knows she is at greater risk of cancer, she has regular screening to detect any new cancer early.

We're proud to support P.O.R.T today, on the first CIPO/PIPO awareness day, which would have been Emily's birthday.

At Bowel Research UK, we believe it's also vital that those who benefit from research and improved care understand what our researchers do and why. We strive to do this through communication channels, including our Patient and Public Involvement network (PaRT).
A recent report has revealed most of the public "think scientists make a valuable contribution to society". It highlights how important it is for researchers to have a strong relationship with the public and for people to understand/feel informed about science.

We're here to end bowel cancer and bowel diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease. By collaborating across different autoimmune conditions through Connect Immune Research, we can transform lives faster than working in isolation.
Collaboration equals faster discoveries and better awareness. π€
Bowel Research UK is part of Connect Immune Research, a growing partnership of 16 organisations working together. Our shared aim is to understand how different autoimmune conditions are linked and raise awareness of this. π£

We'd also like to say a huge thank you to all our dedicated researchers for everything you do for the bowel cancer and bowel disease community. π
