English only sometimes though. 😂 France is by far the most anti-English language country I’ve been to, but that’s not super surprising.
As someone who worked at videostores for a decade, I remember discovering this one back then and cherishing its weirdo vibes. Worth a nostalgia watch for sure.
Baffled by who the audience for AI-tainted classic films is. If you're into old movies, you're probably also into the mythology of old movies, which means that the ones left unfinished, studio-butchered, or lost are bittersweet warnings to you, not objects waiting for a saviour technology to arrive.
Elephant statue.
Doing Disney Paris this week for my kids’ spring break and I was tickled to see their Adventure Land Hollywood area having an homage to the elephants from INTOLERANCE that used to be at the Hollywood and Highland mall. They’re gone, but their legacy endures.
"I drank down this intoxicating account in avid gulps, my eyes bulging with revelation at every turn." — Guy Maddin on THE CURSE OF QUEEN KELLY by Pamela Hutchinson.
The full, astonishing saga of silent cinema's most scandalous unfinished masterpiece out March 27th from SPB.
The fabulous Joan Blondell is on #TCM all day today. If that doesn’t make you want to call out sick from work I don’t know how to help you. #TCMParty
Lew Ayres marches off to his death in ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930).
Lewis Milestone's ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930) screens today at Regal cinemas.
A multiplex chain playing a powerful anti-war film during a stupid, unnecessary war is coincidental, but it sure feels prescient.
Tix are $7.99. Catch this Oscar winner on the big screen if you can. #FilmSky
If you're in the mood for books that:
🔎 Don't glamorize the upheaval of the 1950s

A glamorous black and white portrait of Joan Crawford. She is wearing a form-fitting, shimmering gown with a high neckline, standing gracefully with her hands clasped together.

Powell shares a shower with another man. The man is rubbing Powell's chest. ([sing] we all go down to the YMCA) The Alamy watermark is all over the picture though I would sincerely love to see the company document how it owns a copyright on this image.
Figured it was a good night to rewatch HIGH PRESSURE (32) on Criterion Channel. William Powell's Warners pre-Codes are always so interesting, always in stark contrast to his time at MGM. He's still charming and witty, but less debonair and more of a sly, quick-witted horndog.
