Word of the day is ‘bugiard’ (17th century): one who distorts the truth beyond all recognition to fit their own agenda.

A reminder of a pretty etymology to brighten the day. The ‘daisy’ takes its name from the Old English ‘dæges ēage’, ‘day’s eye’, because it opens its petals at dawn, and closes them again at dusk.

Cartoon drawing of two men chatting via speech bubbles. One says I love Venn diagrams, the other says Venn diagrams are rubbish. The speach bubbles overlap for the words 'Venn diagrams'

A reason to be cheerful: This is the final Monday of January. Then no more January Mondays for 355 days.

Word of day is ‘unasinous’ (17th century): united in stupidity.

A riff on ‘unanimous’: which comes from the Latin for ‘one mind’. ‘Unasinous’ means ‘one ass’.

You wouldn't let this happen to your phone. Don't let this happen to you either. Self care is a priority, not a luxury.

Little mental health tip from someone that's done activism for 20 years.

It's ok to withdraw and take a break from it, even at times when it seems you shouldn't. Better to be stronger later.

It's ok (mandatory even) to not read news sites for a few weeks at your lowest ebb.

Look after yourselves.

Oligarchy (noun): A government of and by a few at the top, who exercise power for their own benefit. Their power and wealth increase as they make laws that favor themselves, manipulate financial markets, and create monopolies that put more wealth into their pockets.

A cartoon by Mike Luckovich shows a large blue gulf labeled "Gulf of America," separating two masses of densely packed dots representing people. A yellow banner on the left side reads "Informed Voters," while a yellow banner on the right side reads "Uninformed Voters." The image humorously depicts a divide between informed and uninformed voters.

Perfectly depicted.

Oddly enough Jurassic Park covers this perfectly. It’s a mentality of getting rich quick with no desire to understand what is happening or potential consequences. And a deep resentment that someone else might know more than they do.

I was listening to an interview with Ayana Elizabeth Johnson a few days ago who said we need more stories in Hollywood depicting a solutions oriented future beyond dystopia.

My first thought: Star Trek’s been there this entire time. Gene Roddenberry+ have given us a lot on which to build.

I try hard with these dances to make sure it feels like a character is dancing to a song that’s true to them, and there’s no universe where you could convince me that Linda isn’t an absolute Monster for Lady Gaga’s discography.

A Red Kite in mid-flight, its russet-brown body and forked tail highlighted against a stunning frosty winter landscape. The pale blue background creates a serene yet dynamic scene, emphasising the bird's graceful, outstretched wings as it glides effortlessly through the crisp air.
