Remember when Republicans drew Virginia's Congressional map so Black people were packed into one district and said we should be grateful they gave our community this district. NOW they can have one district and see how much they love it.

The Virginia Redistricting Amendment has passed.
This changes Virginia's congressional maps from a 6-5 Democratic split to a 10-
1 Democratic split, representing a four-seat gain for Democrats.

the cool thing about being a progressive normielib is that I can just say “this is awesome” instead of doing a bunch of throat clearing about loathing Spanberger before I praise her for obliterating 4 Republican seats

Passing the legislature twice with an election in between and then also passing a referendum is common but on the more difficult end of state constitutional amendment methods.

The implicit media consensus is that urban voters should not be able to overrule rural voters, but that rural voters should be able to overrule urban voters, an assumption so axiomatic and unquestionable that nobody even understands they're making it.

And in fact Republican states like Utah and Ohio have retained their gerrymanders in open defiance of successful referendums demanding non-partisan redistricting

I don't really approve of gerrymandering, but our wise and enlightened Supreme Court has said it was totally in accordance with the law and custom Constitution, and who am I argue with the Sainted John Roberts? 🥺🥺🥺

"Harris Rotbarth, once Reb Hersch, lived in a tenement on 97 Forsyth Street. It would have been the same sort of place in which I spent my early twenties, a lightless railroad apartment with an air shaft for ventilation, where the sounds of child abuse mingled with the scuttling of rats. At least I had my own room. In Sam’s day, the Lower East Side was one of the most"

uuuhhhhh noooooo I don't think the NYC apartment you had in your 20s in the early 2000s is the same as a New York tenement in the 1904!

The safest place for a Jew to be in the world c. 1920 was probably the vibrant urban US & even there the level of antisemitism was appalling.

Explicit discrimination in hiring and college admissions, ubiquitous hate crimes and general harassment, and forced Christian school prayer were ubiquitous.

The people asking “Does Israel have a right to exist?” are usually asking, “Does Israel have the right to prioritize maintaining a Jewish voting majority above enfranchising every person living in the territory they are governing?” And I wish they would be honest enough to ask that question.

This tweet is highly defamatory and Martina Navratilova should be fired from BBC Sport for it.

It demonstrates an horrendous level of hatred for a trans woman (who was cleared of all wrongdoing in a recent tribunal) because she is a trans woman.

Vote Blue No Matter Who: Party Politics As Political Agency Politics is a collective enterprise aimed at controlling the state, and requires working together as co-partisans.

"In America today we have a party of ordinary governance and a personality cult party. Those are the two options we are now offered every general election, and it really is that simple." www.liberalcurrents.com/vote-blue-no...

Democrats getting more backlash for attempting redistricting in Virginia in response to completely unprecedented GOP powergrabs than Republicans have gotten for gerrymandering for decades is extremely grim shit ngl.

To expand on THIS:

A quality of constitutional adjudication is that there will always be reasonable disagreement about whether the Court got it right. That's just part of the whole pluralism thing. Democratic constitutionalism therefore requires that people be able to accept...

To expand on this a little: one thing that playing fast and loose with the facts lets you do as a judge is lie about the legal principles you're using to decide cases
