NEW BLOG POST
Edmonton's housing momentum didn't stop at the end of 2025.
Q1 2026 data is in and Edmonton is on track for another strong year of homebuilding in the places people want to live. The rowhome revolution continues. 🧵

These projects add Ownership and Rental (suites) options across our historic communities. This is housing where there otherwise would not have been. Nanaimo changed its housing environment before its land values made it too late.
Why BCs Missing Middle Legislation Mattered: close to 60 housing units being built “gently” across neighbourhoods in Nanaimo where little change has been seen in decades. Carriage homes, Two Single Family homes with suites, duplexes, and 4-plexes.
Love to see this work being done in Vic

While the location of Hullo Ferries isn’t the best for walkability, the best way to get there is taking Evo Bikes. No paying for parking, no need for taxi, easy drop off. My 25 minute ride from home cost $3.50. And it’s a 100% car free trip to Vancouver. #hulloferries #bcurbanism
Minimum lot size regulations have done a lot of harm. How much harm? @lausterna.bsky.social and I ran estimates for Vancouver and the numbers are staggering.

I really appreciate this point. It’s easy to hate the abstract “plex,” but it’s hard to hate, even the aesthetics, of someone’s home.
What does the region’s and Saanich’s 3.3% vacancy rate actually mean?
Let’s look into it:

Well… This is awful.
BC Transit had already been unable to keep up with local governments’ requests for improved transit projects in recent years. Now, all expansions for 2027 are on hold.

Yesterday, Oregon's legislature voted to ban underfunded inclusionary zoning from the Portland metro area.
It's a big turnaround, and I hope a path forward for other states too.

I know… I hope Vancouver’s new version of an external stair will provide a useful comparison in the future that could be added to the BCBC.
Maybe!?These are just development permits so nothing being built. But it’s very exciting to see some exploration. One of the projects is an affordable housing project. As for costs, my understanding is the BC building codes require a much larger stair and fire separations which might add cost.
I’ve been diving into the City’s delegated development permit logs: tender.victoria.ca/webapps/ourc...
While the Official Community Plan (OCP) is great there is still work that could be done to help make these type of projects feasible without making them meet the massive lot width requirements of normal double loaded apartments.
Very exciting to see new single stair proposals in Victoria BC! A result of municipal leadership, BC Building Code Changes, and a New City Plan. These builds would have been completely impossible several years ago and now we’re seeing the results - larger units + cross ventilation #singlestairs
This is deeply needed. Currently there is little turn over in downtown parking leaving little space for pick ups and drop offs. Hopefully this will incentivize more availability of spaces . cheknews.ca/nanaimo-to-r...
You bet we are 😉 Tod gave an amazing talk a few years ago for STN :)
No kidding… Strong Towns Nanaimo and other groups are pushing for it. Maybe one day!
So many lost opportunities by not having a simple and predictable bus system between Nanaimo and Victoria. Build👏🏼The👏🏼Bus👏🏼

BREAKING: We're staying at 8 homes per lot!
Edmonton City Council today voted against reducing the maximum number of homes per lot from 8 to 6 in the RS zone! #yeg #yegcc
Phew 😮💨 Now if only the province could redistribute that $162 million towards a multi regional bus system instead of sending onto another road project…
