I'm not from the UK so I can't speak to that experience but I used to live in a very rural part of the upper Midwest of the US, just getting to the airport would take 150 mile/3 hour round trip, so missing a flight would be catastrophic, also a few hour wait won't kill you imo

I'm saying this as someone who did work at (two) nuclear power plants for a while, and is pro nuclear (and renewables) itself. a lot of the pro nuclear crowd is not helping the perception of nuclear power as much as they think they are.

The whole idea that you can become permanently excluded while society moves on without you if you don’t adopt new tech “fast enough” is propaganda designed to drive fear-based impulse buying of anything marketed as “the next big thing”.

The way I see it is, yes, there may be some uses for LLMs for the software people, but I also believe the silicon valley (which is really just the peter thiel and associates) vision of the future cannot be allowed to come to pass

the thing about our current moment is that yes, the anti-AI and anti-big tech people are getting very reactive nowadays - but have you seen what they’re *reacting* to?

“People need to be nicer to each other online” and “people need to develop thicker skin because it’s not normal or healthy to get upset at everything you don’t agree with” are two statements than can and should coexist actually

My grandpa, who worked for AT&T Long Lines or the long distance phone carrier company. Always said there was some alarm, failure, or fault somewhere in the system, and that's how it always will be, and this was well before software took over everything.

There are people like me who support critical infrastructure (in my case two way radio and SCADA) It's always been something that requires a massive and constant human effort to keep these systems running with how little of us there are.

women will literally get ham radio licenses and set up custom equipment just to find a way to flirt with each other using early 20th century technology

I lament that such a wonderful achievement has to be juxtaposed with these atrocities... Eisenhower's a chance for peace feels awfully haunting right now

I think it was Lockhart's lament(?) that showed me how flawed American math teaching is, and part of me wonders how intentional that is

And I'm not like 100% anti data center but it's like, how much of the new rush built ones are actually necessary, and electricity isn't like, an infinite resource (solar will not help here, nor will adding battery systems) connecting everything to the cloud isn't a good thing

The comparison to hating the printing press is just ???, printing presses weren't sucking up that much electricity, or just getting so much natural gas turbines in one place to choke the nearby redlined neighborhood
