You need to have a taste for important problems and not follow your curiosity down many dead ends. But the optimal number of encountered cul-de-sacs is not zero.

I find having limited compute to be a pretty inspirational research setting. You need to have some minimum baseline of compute to play around, but it's not a wild amount
