Very strange that the "OJ is innocent" crowd don't realize that they are essentially just doing domestic violence apologism.

My imagination makes me human and makes me a fool; it gives me all the world and exiles me from it.
Woah this is excellent! Where is this from?
Our listener, Markus, lost a friend tragically a month or so ago, and when he went to search info about her online, he found a bunch of AI generated, deeply edited incorrect info about her. Looking into these took us places. Please listen.
One of my favorite pieces ever! I listen to it nearly every day
Sorry “longer jail time”
Good to know, but I think our differences are bigger than you think. More police is not the solution and I actually think we have different concepts of the problem.
Punishment unfortunately doesn’t not work for drug use, theft and other quality of life crimes. There’s lots and lots of research about it! If you want those things follow the evidence based solutions
You don’t think there are drugs and guns in NYC?!
You’re literally both wrong and just tipped from “probably arguing in good faith” to potential right wing troll.
There are literally dozens of articles about the “NYC shoplifting plague” their city council wants to ban self checkout! Whole Foods has a pseudo jail!
Not to mention that whatever you’re proposing already isn’t working. These stores have heavily armed security, SPD regularly focuses on the area (and has made tons of arrests in the surrounding area.) What more do you want?
They are! These are all crimes of poverty. When people have what they need they have less need for any of this (and no need to do it in public)
We aren’t going to solve the problem of drugs, guns or theft by having cops protect QFC and locking more people up. That has been proven time and time and time again.
When times are hard people are going to steal stuff from grocery stores. The solution is to take care of people’s needs not further criminalize them.
That’s a lot to sacrifice for not that much savings imo. I actually spend less on similar at the co op when I buy in bulk (though that doesn’t make sense for everyone.)
Even other corporates like Trader Joe’s achieves similar prices with less downside (mostly.)
This also gives them leverage when pushing for things like tax breaks or special treatment (like expensive tax payer funded police sting operations!) and means community members (like yourself!) regularly cap for them as if they are the only option.
Individual corporate grocery stores run on smaller margins because it’s the fact that parent companies own thousands of them that makes money in the long run… this means that not only do they not put much care into individual locations, but they also don’t really mind closing them on little notice.
Europe is very different than the US and is not always the shining beacon of perfection we think, but even so I didn’t endorse that idea here. And actually the small margins of corporate stores are part of the problem!
I went through this in Chicago, parts of Atlanta, and NYC have been through it (prompting Mamdani’s public grocery store idea.) Corporate grocers are a net negative for communities.
The co-op is more expensive (though not always and not by much!) but it also puts money back into the community. Even in food deserts (which Capitol Hill is not) corporate grocers have proven to be an extremely poor solution.
That’s like saying you need a Walmart in the suburbs because your town lacks small businesses.
The Walmart (or in this case the QFC) makes it harder for real local options to survive.
We’re lucky we have two local co ops nearby that are actually well run.
I’m sorry but why should we want businesses run (extremely poorly I might add) by such companies as Kroger and Albertsons in our neighborhood?
A collective photo taken at Firestorm Books. Our team, including five humans and two dogs, is sitting on the sidewalk in front of the building looking relaxed. The sky is bright but cloudy and flags on the building hang without any indication of wind. The building is painted forest green and various posters and signs are visible in the windows, which reflect the sky. The largest reads "Immigrants Welcome."
Like a lot of small businesses in our region, Firestorm has been in financial distress for the last year. Hurricane Helene was our tipping point, but local cost of living increases, inflation, and higher occupancy costs are huge contributors. 1/9
You will die. You will not live forever. Nor will any man nor any thing. Nothing is immortal. But only to us is it given to know that we must die. And that is a great gift: the gift of selfhood. For we have only what we know we must lose, what we are willing to lose.
So, here's a cool thing I'm a part of.
A ton of Science Fictioners read out each entry on Ursula K. Le Guin's famed blog.
I'm so glad it's finally getting a broadcast schedule.

Came here for this one.
