Political scientists often say that MENA fell behind due to “institutions”

But geography is important.

MENA lacks vast agrarian plains.

Agriculture is marginal & farmers often reverted to pastoralism, weakening tax revenues.

Also lots of nomadic incursions vs walled cities.

🚨The 2nd chapter of my thesis was just published in Studies in Family Planning! Together with Ewa Batyra and Albert Esteve, we find that counteracting fertility and child mortality dynamics contribute to stable levels of out-fostering in Senegal.
