I’m guessing the wastewater data will catch up soon bc everywhere I turn people are sick right now… &/or coming to terms with new chronic conditions & sending out “I’m stepping back from xyz to prioritize my health” messages 💔 I sent that same message 6 years ago. Still sick. Important thread ⬇️

I have an illness which is largely, not completely, but largely preventable.
This illness has impacted my life to the point where I’ve lost my home, my job, my social life & hobbies.
This illness also killed several friends as well as my parents.
This illness has no cure.

anti poetica

there is no poem greater than feeding someone
there is no poem wiser than kindness
there is no poem more important than being good to children
there is no poem outside love's violent potential for cruelty
there is no poem that ends grief but nurses it toward light
there is no poem that isn't jealous of song or murals or wings
there is no poem free from money's ruin
no poem in the capital nor the court
most policy rewords a devil's script
there is no poem in the law
there is no poem in the west
there is no poem in the north
poems only live south of something
meaning beneath & darkened & hot
there is no poem in the winter nor in whiteness
nor are there poems in the landlord's name
no poem to admonish the state
no poem with a key to the locks
no poem to free you

I just keep thinking in a just world I wouldn’t be treated as the crazy/demanding/inconsiderate one in this situation

Thank you. It really is, especially considering the procedure I need anesthesia for (& had to do a GoFundMe to afford) is for a complication of Covid 😣

I tried to thread the needle this week & politely advocate for my medical providers to mask for me when I have to be unmasked under anesthesia, but I think it only lowered my chances of them actually doing it. Asking in advance just gives them more time to project their ugly feelings onto me

Watching this happen at every level of society from governments to healthcare to research to media to friends/family/spouses is just so shit

Everybody look at this charming tiny home for sale in Portland. It's only 8'6" wide, so you can move it anywhere

Ugh, it never ceases to amaze me how stupid & unaccommodating & liable to make us worse the medical system is. I hope it all went okay & you got the answers you needed!

Right?? It shouldn’t be such a rare privilege to have a doctor who has actually heard of, believes in, & even knows enough to treat your extremely common debilitating disease 🫠 (Dr Chheda/Center for Complex Diseases)

We want to talk to anyone in prison who thinks they may have Long COVID, and would appreciate readers sharing this call for sources with any loved ones, friends, or contacts.

People in prison have limited access to information, so they may not know much about what Long COVID is. Rather than just asking if someone has Long COVID, you may need to explain that a person might have it if they got COVID-19 and never felt they really got all the way better or if an old health issue got a lot worse after COVID-19.

Anyone with ideas for sources should contact reporter October Krausch by May 31 at rebelprof@proton.me

If writing from the prison:
The Sick Times

Reporter @octoberk.bsky.social is working with The Sick Times on an investigation about the experience of #LongCOVID in prison, which will also highlight how people outside of prisons can advocate on this issue.

the lost women
By Lucille Clifton

i need to know their names
those women i would have walked with
jauntily the way men go in groups
swinging their arms, and the ones
those sweating women whom i would have joined
after a hard game to chew the fat
what would we have called each other laughing
joking into our beer? where are my gangs,
my teams, my mislaid sisters?
all the women who could have known me,
where in the world are their names?

Today is Tinu's birthday.🎂

Tinu always had a birthday week and birthday month.
Celebrate her life and legacy!
Engage in mutual aid, do something for yourself, rest aggressively when needed, check in on your friends, read her words, say hello to some ducks!
So many ways to honor our beloved Tinu.✨

This was one of the formative incidents in my young life. And I watched almost an entire city of people across racial lines absolutely lose their minds. It was the equivalent of a lynch mob and the NY press was leading the way.

Telemachus' Detachment

When I was a child looking
at my parents' lives, you know
what I thought? I thought
heartbreaking. Now I think
heartbreaking, but also
insane. Also
very funny.

Iris Long, Scientific Mentor to AIDS Activists, Dies at 92

UNSUNG HERO: Iris Long was an unlikely AIDS activist. A married chemist from Queens, she barely knew any gay people. She joined ACT UP to use her expertise to fight for treatments. May her memory be a blessing.

Two ancestors of deer talk to each other, "Indohyus, my brother. I've decided to search for more food in the waters." "You will regret this Pakicetus. The environment will force you to adapt." "I just need some shrimps lol I will be perfectly fine."
35 million years later, a huge blue whale floats over a tiny deer, "AAAOOOOOOOOAAAAHHH MRUUUUUHHHH BWOOOOEEEEE" and the deer says "WTF"

I hear that! I mostly get mad when fake empathy is offered in lieu of real care, but having to go through the song & dance of performing gratitude in exchange for performed empathy/is also very obnoxious! Like, I didn’t come to the dentist because I wanted pity, I came to get my teeth cleaned 🙃

Something I appreciate about my ME specialist is that she doesn’t waste time performing empathy—which is what most doctors seem to think patients like me want. “If I say ‘that sounds so hard’ with my eyebrows crinkled, this bitch should be happy, right?”

Wrong. We just want doctors to do their job.

When people don’t respect you they’ll treat you terribly, blame you for their harmful behavior, & then convert any guilt they may feel into more hatred & disrespect towards you. It happens on an institutional level like this, & it happens on a personal level. And everyone with ME has experienced it
