I recently offered a local a ride to a sushi meetup. They were shocked that I was brown. They left the event nearly immediately. Zero thanks, and they have not messaged me since.
As though I should front-load my ethnicity in a group that's all about pretending they're animals.
That really hurts.
There will always be an unbearable weight on your chest and your shoulders.
To be more, better, greater. Thinner. Whiter.
But they will just hate you more.
There's a big fuss around being "inclusive", but what they really mean is absolving sin if you look like them.
But if you don't you'll be blanked. Some will try to pretend you don't even exist when you're standing right in front of them, trying your best to be kind.
They'll swat your paw away.
Nothing you do, nothing you achieve, feels like it's earned because they already choose to believe you were handed it over them.
You can't just be smart and deserving.
Dressing well must mean you stole. Drive a new car? Couldn't have earned it. That promotion? Must have lied to get it.
It's difficult being othered immediately, on sight. Trying to create a safe space for others like you, just by showing up. That feeling of being unwanted, hearing their whispers, seeing their expressions. Their rumours.
And if you bite back it's even worse. You fuel their hatred.
As one of the only non-white folx in the South African furry community for over 25 years... I got some stuff I need to say.
It's really difficult being the only person in the room that's visibly different. It's really difficult carrying that weight for others. I know what they say about me.
