And each turn you can either play a land or a Wurm. Everyone starts with enough lands to Cast him outright on turn 1, even though they arent needed to cast him.

I feel like the object would be to end the game controlling the most copies of him. You can cast him for free, but only one per turn. Lands are resources meant only to be sacrificed. You DONT want your opponents to have any, but if you end your turn with no lands, the game ends.
