A side view of the very small fly, body is mostly black, with bright yellow head markings and legs. The wings can be seen but they are really just narrow flaps with reduced venation compared to most flies

Some flies prefer walking! This is less than 2 mm of cuteness in the form of the short-winged anthomyzid fly Stiphrosoma sabulosum, whose larvae feed on grasses - found by suction sampling in Middlesex last week #Diptera #ento

Hi Bluesky people! I've mostly been off social media this past year but I plan on posting stuff up on here going forward. For those who haven't followed me elsewhere here is a thread of some of the funky flies I've looked at under the microscope these past years as a taste of future content. Enjoy!

Every year I say to myself I'll have to curate all my flies. Then I get to spring and all I've done is empty the freezer and it's time to start again! Now onto 4 full drawers and half a dozen large WatDon boxes packed to brim and each year it becomes even more of a task

As soon as you delete them you'll need a crucial bit of info from an email you sent two years ago

Just make sure to remember you don't have it on a cord around your neck! I've tried big pockets and bum bags a few times but always instinctively drop the pooter
