Good. More and more parents and educators and boards are starting to wake up. It’s one of the silver linings in the over-the-top AI push. May these waves build into a tsunami against overreaching edtech.

This is not a skill I have taught my child. I am a bird novice
I was looking at some birds with my six year-old and pointed out a shiny one and she just nonchalantly tossed out, "Oh that? That's just a Common Grackle" and it FUCKING WAS.
I mean, I'm impressed

Look what arrived, @chadgibbs101.bsky.social !!
Perplexity’s CEO is just the latest tech leader to tell the public their jobs will be sacrificed on the altar of the glorious AI future.
It’s a compelling narrative, but it distracts us from the real impact of AI: not to take the human out of the loop, but to take away their power and cut their pay
image of Palantir stock price increasing after Trump elected
Karp once studied and opposed fascism. How did he become someone a Trump defender? Palantir's value is fused to MAGA.
In the Times, @michellegoldberg.bsky.social says: "the best explanation for Karp’s journey — as for most of his right-wing billionaire compatriots — is the vulgar materialist one.”
Some cultures have produced vital advances; others remain dysfunctional and regressive. All cultures are now equal. Criticism and value judgments are forbidden. Yet this new dogma glosses over the fact that certain cultures and indeed subcultures . . . have produced wonders. Others have proven middling, and worse, regressive and harmful. We must resist the shallow temptation of a vacant and hollow pluralism. We, in America and more broadly the West, have for the past half century resisted defining national cultures in the name of inclusivity. But inclusion into what?
The manifesto makes a straightforward case that government and Silicon Valley power must be fused in order to defend Western values - which are superior to others - with hard rather than soft power. For many, this sounds like techno-fascism.

Apparently Sam Altman also wrote a manifesto (on top of Marc Andreessens a while back). Are there others?
Genuine question: why do we think the tech bros are doing this? Which need does this fulfill for them?
Nine. Months. Ago.
not to mention that even for those fortunate enough to land a tt job in the humanities, their entry into the world of full-time employment only comes after a roughly decade-long period of study, postdocs & insecure employment, so wealth accumulation (such as it is) and retirement savings start late
Frank Herbert I apologize for ever doubting you
That's right
Wake up babe, we are doing the Protestant Reformation but as farce
A man of the people, ladies and gentlemen
"The University of California system, the California State system, the City University of New York — these are the institutions actually educating America’s workforce, actually moving first-generation students into the middle class, actually delivering on higher education’s democratic promise."
The idea that universities ”tend to exclude conservative intellectual traditions” is off base on two fronts: 1) how are “conservative intellectual traditions” relevant to the most of the popular majors and faculty research areas, such as computer science, engineering, the natural sciences?/1
I teach in a European business school far more pluralistic than it's US cousins and I have had multiple masters students (who have typically also done a bachelor's at the same school) tell me my class is the first time they've encountered teaching or material even vaguely critical of capitalism.
It is really time for this man's presidency to end
La présidence de l'Université du Mirail a appelé la police et fait appel à une entreprise de sécurité privée pour réprimer violemment un rassemblement contre l'austérité. Des étudiant.es ont été frappé·es et ont subi de violentes intimidations de la part de la BAC.

“viewpoint diversity” is a right-wing political project, as lisa siraganian explores in great detail here: www.aaup.org/academe/issu...
Viewpoint diversity would be hiring someone at Associate Professor rabk from a small nonelite teaching school in the Plains. It'd be an actually diversity of view point, rather than political leanings within the same white elite upper coastal class. But cool, yo, hire some Nazis I guess.
How dare they

INBOX: Amid rising tendons between Trump and Pope Leo, the administration has abruptly canceled an $11 million contract with Catholic Charities to shelter and care for migrant children who enter the U.S. alone, ending a relationship dating back to the first arrivals of Cuban exiles in South Florida.
Fair!
A work of history, no less!
If it's their only book? Fair.

Today I encountered an academic who self-published a book and I am sorry but if your book is not peer- or even editorially-reviewed it is absolutely not an academic book. I will die on this hill
