The oil industry is making billions from the Iran war—it should be taxed - CCPA The current windfall could be Canadian oil's final boom—so the proceeds must be reinvested into economic diversification and industrial planning

Last week, @policyalternatives.ca put together an urgent call for Canada to tax the profits that the oil and gas industry is making off the war in Iran. Yesterday, the best Carney could do was removing tax on average people, further defunding the state.

Yes to all of the above, and….

It would be interesting to work up a business case for this (is it more efficient use of tax $ than current gov housing programs?), but…

Going back to the pipeline, the feds figured out how to finance that so I feel this can be done too. We just need political will.

@lanefab.com had a good idea - the Feds should buy housing projects currently in financial distress. They don’t need to start from scratch, could be a huge win.

If we can buy a pipeline, we certainly can do this…

Seems like the fine amount of $4,500 is too low to discourage this type of thing from happening again.

Elect Respect — A Pledge to Restore Civility in the Public Square Join a Growing Movement

There is also a nationwide campaign, Elect Respect: a pledge to foster respect, inclusivity, and safety in public life. I've signed it, & I hope all candidates and incumbents do the same.

Elect Respect — A Pledge to Restore Civility in the Public Square Join a Growing Movement

This task force is developing local rules for how elected officials (& candidates) communicate publicly & on social media. I am happy to participate in the work with Cllrs Lurbiecki, Dilworth & Lubik w/ 3 community leaders.

These are proposed guidelines for communications, i.e. not mandatory.

Elect Respect — A Pledge to Restore Civility in the Public Square Join a Growing Movement

I'm happy to see that Port Moody's process is very similar to the proposed new bill. I think this also ties in well with the Task Force on Public and Social Media Communications Guidelines for Elected Officials and Candidates' work.

✅ Both start with a formal, written complaint
✅ Both attempt resolution before moving to investigation
✅ Both use an independent investigator for unresolved complaints
✅ Both apply to elected officials' conduct (respect, harassment, bullying)
✅ Both give Council the final say on sanctions

The similarities between Port Moody's current Council Code of Conduct complaint process and the province's proposed model (Bill 17) demonstrate common ground (more details in the image):

Spring has very much arrived and with that, sunny & warm weather - the perfect day for the farmers market!

As you may have seen, this week at Council it was decided, with the market’s support, to move the market to the Old Firehall site. This change will occur in the fall.

This appears to be an improvement, at least on the surface.

Having the same process across all munis & defined range of sanctions could also remove some of the criticism about the perceived persecution of individual council members by others with “an axe to grind”.

Carney’s ‘Defeatist’ Dismissal of International Law | The Tyee The PM’s doctrine stresses ‘taking the world as it is.’ Critics say it poses ‘reckless’ risk for Canada.

“Canadians do not have to take the world as it is. We do not have to stay silent on violations of international law. We do not have to look away when schoolchildren are bombed. We do not have to rationalize injustice to appease a bully.” thetyee.ca/Analysis/202... @thetyee.ca

The B.C. heat wave of summer 2021 brought what may’ve been the province’s worst five days in history, starting with the silent death of 619 Metro Vancouver residents and ending with the destruction of #Lytton, one of our most historic communities, writes Geoff Meggs.
