Latest episode out now! Ft. @matiangai.bsky.social discussing how the interests of whiteness have often dominated global public health policy and how the long shadow of medical colonialism shows up today.

At least 13 people “are publicly known to have been wrongfully arrested by U.S. police because of reliance on erroneous facial recognition results…”
“We are not treating [Long COVID] with as much seriousness as we should be treating it. And when that doesn’t happen, then people don’t open up.”
New feature by Jamie Ducharme about #LongCOVID's unreported toll across the globe.

A decade under a public health emergency and nearly tens of thousands dead is horrific. Catastrophic. Grotesque. Governments are meant to keep people safe. The BCNDP knows thousands are dying every year from unregulated drugs. They choose to not regulate the drugs.
Today I am exhausted with grief.
Oh it is not like many people have pointed out how bad this would be oh including me
“Body cameras… will also introduce the potential for further harms associated with facial recognition technology.”

"…I have to say that this is likely the most high risk algorithmic surveillance program that I have observed to date in Canada," said Kate Robertson, a senior research associate with the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab.
“The facial recognition model was supplied by Corsight AI, an Israeli company whose technology has reportedly been used for mass surveillance in Gaza.”

A worker died at an Amazon warehouse in Oregon last week.
For more than an hour, workers were instructed to continue working as the man lay dead.
One worker wanted to help, but a manager told them to “Just turn around and not look. Let’s get back to work," according to @thewesternedge.bsky.social.
Update: 18 months since @ubcmedicine.bsky.social SPPH let me go for speaking out about Israel's genocide in Gaza. Faculty Asscoiation grievance filed 14 mon. ago. Process is painfully slow & no arbitration has been scheduled. As I've said before: I will not sign an NDA as a condition of settlement.
Please, is there no limit? Destroying public health AND podcasting 🫠 My work will never be done.
Well folks, it’s been a wrap. Podcasting is over.
I'm going to become the public health joker
@klaszus.bsky.social what’s the best way to contact you?
Thanks for tagging me! :)
damn aaron swartz tried to warn everybody about sam altman
Airborne, ffs. Say. Airborne.
Measles doesn't spread easily in some magical locations. It spreads easily where we share air and there is insufficient ventilation and filtration (building, room aka portable HEPA, personal aka CAN95s scale) to prevent inhaling infectious aerosols.
Grow up already 🤬
hey I'm in a bit of a jam which is kind of a bad one and I realize I'm prone to understate my own problems but if a few folks could chip in it would really help, I need to get 150$ together fairly quick
I'm sorry I'm trying my best here

If you want to help, there’s a petition to demand Rodney’s release.
Please sign, share and encourage others to sign!
Public pressure makes a difference and disabled people are left behind far too often.
Let’s ensure Rodney doesn’t get left behind:

Gilead has a drug that could prevent HIV with just 2 injections a year. MSF said "we'll buy it name your price." Gilead said no.
Let that sink in. Pharmacological innovation without access for those who need it does not accomplish its potential.

Tested is one of my favourite podcast series in the last few years and you should give it a listen. imo it’s compassionate and incisive and unravels the bullshit spun around trans people in sports in such a straightforward way. And it’s just a good listen. www.tested-podcast.com
Sidebar: May or may not be at play but it is definitely not lost on me that Kirsty Coventry is a white Zimbabwean (whom I grew up hearing about alllllllll the time, as a non-white Zimbabwean)
“all these papers that all claimed that it made sense that there was a disparate impact of these policies were all based on a paper *by a eugenicist who did not even manage to prove his argument*.“
As with many things, the shady backdrop is eugenics: “This was a white geneticist working in apartheid South Africa on genetic differences between white and Black Africans. And he states explicitly that his goal is to prove that what he calls intersex conditions are more prevalent in Black Africans”
“Science is an incredibly powerful way to understand the world. But plenty of people use the name recognition of "evidence" without actually having the right kind. Right now we're seeing the ways in which evidence is being manufactured and manipulated and misrepresented to hurt people.”
“In fact, one of the most striking things to me about the history and present of sex testing is that when you look into the evidence that props up these policies, you find that often it does not actually exist.”
Also if you're like "no I don't want 3,000 words interrogating the manufacturing of evidence just tell me what the fuck this policy says" I also have that for you: buttondown.com/tested/archi...
It’s like that game Taboo. They’ll say everything except the word you’re not allowed to say 🫠 PHAC: “”the virus can linger in fine aerosols & remain suspended in the air we breathe, much as expelled smoke lingers in poorly ventilated spaces,” which describes aerosols causing airborne transmission.”
One of the reasons I covered the Olympic policy from this angle is that a lot of media is failing to cover the IOC policy for what it is.
When you say athletes have to undergo mandatory testing, it's important to highlight that only women have to do it ...
