A cast member of Verdi's opera Il Trovatore unfurled a Palestinian flag on stage at London's Royal Opera House, despite attempts from someone backstage to take it away.
A spokesperson for the Royal Ballet and Opera called it a “wholly inappropriate act.”
Juli was able to make a phone call late Friday and told her family that: She is in a warehouse, but she does not know the location She believes that the people who picked her up are bounty hunters There are many others being held where she is being held.
Yuriana Julia Pelaez Calderon, an organizer with the Los Angeles-based Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, was picked up by men in an unmarked car last Wednesday, and nobody knows where she is. She made a phone call late Friday and the information she gave is chilling:
Take a minute to look at these increases to the ICE budget in the GOP mega bill. Take another minute to let it sink in. They're preparing a police state that will far exceed rounding up Spanish-speaking brown people.
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:
- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.

These 75 Democrats joined Republicans to "express gratitude" to ICE agents and call for greater local and state collaboration with ICE.

“Those same networks of community organizers and activists — many of whom had previously mobilized around housing justice, Palestinian solidarity and other causes — quickly pivoted to immigration enforcement protests.”
“Trump is using military forces to stop a protest — I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us.”

The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.
Solidarity with every single person showing up to defend and protect their loved ones, their neighbors, and their community against state violence. All we have is each other.
We’re staring down fascism and authoritarianism; the only side to be on and to support unequivocally, is that of protesters.
Proud of my hometown ❤️
I'm outside Metropolitan Detention Center where a group of around 50 ppl are protesting the recent immigration raids. Tensions flared for a moment when federal police cleared a path for several vehicles to enter the Federal Building. @lataco.bsky.social
Heavily-armed DHS paramilitary forces in military vehicles fired dozens of stun grenades at a crowd of onlookers today in Los Angeles.
“Obviously, the more people are involved, the better, and there’s a reason to keep track of how many people are involved, but we really need to focus in on what we’re getting people involved to do. And it’s got to be something better, deeper, and more compelling than just telling people to express displeasure with how things are going.” — Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò
“Making durable changes isn’t always about the raw numbers,” says @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social. In addition to hearing Olúfẹ́mi's insights on protest & organizing, this episode may also appeal to people who want to hear me nerd out about direct action. Audio + transcript: truthout.org/audio/awaren...
MAGA Murder Budget Republicans in the House of Representatives passed their mega-budget bill in the wee hours of the morning on Thursday. They held the debate and vote starting at 1am because they didn’t want the public to see what was happening in real time. This budget is bad news for almost everyone, the exception being people who earn more than $1M per year *and* who are US Citizens. Work reporting requirements: enrollees who are between the ages of 19-64 would be required to upload proof every month that they worked at least 80 hours during the previous month. They would have to do this reporting every single month. Eliminate gender affirming care for Medicaid and ACA beneficiaries: the bill bans gender affirming care for all Medicaid recipients, including adults. It also prohibits “gender transition procedures” from being included as an “essential health benefit” for all insurance plans purchased in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace. Almost 1 in 4 trans people are medicaid beneficiaries. It is unclear how many trans people are enrolled in ACA plans. For the first time, parents with children over the age of 6 would be required to prove they are working at least 80 hours-per-month or face losing their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits. This would affect more than 4 million children. Reducing free school lunch eligibility: Right now, if at least 25% of students participate in programs like Medicaid or SNAP, then a school automatically qualifies for the free lunch program. This budget would increase that requirement from 25% to 60% of students. Work requirements do not make it easier to achieve gainful employment. They can’t change how many or what kind of employers are hiring. They don’t provide people with training or education to become gainfully employed. Work requirements don’t increase employment rates. Study of states that have added more stringent work requirements found no meaningful change in employment rates.
Good news of the week: The Boss (a.k.a. Bruce Springsteen) has been using his tour to speak out against the Tyrant President. Boy oh boy did Trump get mad about it. From The Boss himself, “It's in the union of people around a common set of values, now that’s what stands between democracy and authoritarianism…There’s some very weird, strange, and dangerous shit going on out there right now. In America, the richest men are taking satisfaction in abandoning the world’s poorest children to sickness and death. This is happening now, in my country.” Now, we don’t all have the platform that Bruce Springsteen has, but let’s take inspiration from him and use our thousands of voices to speak bravely about what is happening. Call your Senators and US Representative - find them here. Check out https://5calls.org/ for scripts on what to say! Protest: mark you calendar for June 14 https://shorturl.at/OY3wN Trump wants to have a dictator’s birthday celebration. Get ready to show him there are no kings and no dictators in this country. Learn about the origins of the Public Library https://tinyurl.com/pbslib Public libraries are one of the last, great public goods we have in the US. We must protect them. Donate: Local food banks https://tinyurl.com/468293ck They will need all the help they can get if this budget passes as-is. People will lose their SNAP benefits, and children will lose free school meals in many places. They will be turning to food banks for help.
🗣️ WHAT HAPPENED IN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THIS WEEK - May 19-25 - MAGA Murder Budget
Please share this flyer far and wide! Print and post them everywhere - hand them out at your next Tesla Takedown, at your church, at your grocery store!
We are all we’ve got! And everyone has something to give. 💜
This article describes it in more depth, but I want to focus on a few things. First, when you build infrastructure like this and create new jobs/pensions for right-wing unions, it's hard to ever remove them. This new gestapo could become a permanent feature of our lives. www.wola.org/analysis/160...
THREAD. A lot of attention is rightly going to Medicaid cuts and other very bad things in Trump's bill passed by the House, but there's something else that isn't getting enough attention, that is very difficult to find in any news coverage, but that will fundamentally alter life for all of us.
The challenge is to ACT.
YOU, in courageous concert, are the something or someone.
STOP: Don’t panic–organize!
@thefreeradical.org and I consulted for weeks with experts about the bill attacking Medicaid for trans people.
We find that advocates can still kill the bill or mitigate its impacts through direct action and community solidarity. 🧵👇🏽

A very important thing that we can all do -- TALK to people you know about what this bill does. We know the media is going to push Republican framing. We know Republicans will lie. We also know the things this bill does are wildly unpopular. WE have to be the messengers.
A VERY important point -- this bill is not final, not at all. It will now go to the Senate. If the Senate makes changes to the bill (they likely will), it will go back to the House for another vote.
The House passed it last night with ONE VOTE.
We can stop this. We have to.
