Movie ticket prices. The price for a Senior ticket, including the $2.49 convenience fee, is $14.88
Hey AMC, why don't you subtract $0.01 from your convenience fee so that the displayed price isn't 1488 ???

Finally, we will create the Kessler Syndrome from the beloved novel “Don’t Create the Kessler Syndrome.”
. . . which is a compliment, right?
“Vice President JD Vance thinks aliens are visiting earth and that they are Demons” is the most “I wish Carl Sagan were alive” moment I’ve had in a while.
I spent a few hours wallowing in the stacks on Friday, photographing some of the shelves, touching my favorite books, and checking on the books that I have donated over the years... Serendipitously, I also stumbled upon a book about Bletchley Park that I want to read.
Two of my favorite publications, my Laplace-transform paper and my inverted-pendulum paper, only exist because of these open stacks. I would not have been able to accomplish the same level of scholarship if I had been required to "request" each and every book.
I cannot convey the sense of loss that I feel. Many of my publications were only possible because I was able to camp out in the stacks and consult the indexes in a shelf full of books. I am not exaggerating when I say I have flipped through thousands of books in the Barker Library stacks.
MIT has announced that starting Monday, Barker Library will be converted to a 24/7 study space. The stacks will be closed and the front-desk staff will be laid off. libraries.mit.edu/news/barker-...
I do not believe that a university library can fulfill its mission without open stacks.
Steve Jobs and Bill Gates with bad haircuts.
I'm going to tell my kids this is Cabaret Voltaire.
Have you asked @alt-mode.bsky.social ?
Fuck Grammarly. Fuck AI.
This is well known now, but when This Mortal Coil's Filigree and Shadow first came out...
Oops. Sorry. Wrong house.

The best of the Cure are Seventeen Seconds (1980), Faith (1981), and Pornography (1982). Then they broke up.
Head on the Door (1985) and onwards is a different band, also called the Cure, also led by Robert Smith, but not the same as the 1980-1982 trilogy.
I literally reinstalled MikTeX on my laptop earlier this month because I needed to resurrect some slides for a talk on Analog Computing at Harvey Mudd.
The screenshot of the release notes reads: A new version of TeX Live Utility is available! TeX Live Utility 1.55 is now available-you have 1.54. Would you like to download it now? Release Notes: Changes Since 1.54 • Fix bug 137, homepage link in Help Book. • First release in a long time, since I don't use TeX anymore and resent the very idea of paying Apple annually for the privilege of giving away free and open-source software. Also, I'm really lazy. Please accept my apologies for all the annoying issues you've encountered in this mission-critical software. • Updated mirror list, which was three years out of date. • Added missing legacy mirrors, which was even more out of date. • Added an alert on startup when user tries Homebrew's lobotomized MacTex, because those lunatics left timgr but removed its database. Thanks for nothing, guys. Bug 142 and 144. • Use a custom user-agent to work around the Anubis bot trap on texlive.info. Can't wait to see what else breaks because of this, thanks to the profusion of degenerate Artificial Insemination fetishists scraping websites to feed their models. • Lists of countries in Repository/Continent are now sorted. No idea how you people let me get away with that one for the last fifteen years.
There's a "is anyone even reading this" sort of honesty you get in the software update release notes from a project that's been around for a long time.
What were the "notes", NPR?

Agreed, but in this case it was just C-suite management chasing after stock-price-based performance metrics. It's easier to pump the share price with a buyback than to, you know, sell products to customers, or something.
Radio Shack had a net income of $2.7 billion between 2000 and 2011, but spent $3 billion on stock buybacks. The only reason Radio Shack went out of business was stock market greed.

I do not choose this to honor Dave Ball's legacy.
Clearly, that's Bizarro Stephen Mallinder from an evil parallel universe.
Deeeeep cut
(Somebody better at Latin than me could make this into a better joke.)
