Big News! 🎉
Our colleague Stephan Lutter (@wuvienna.bsky.social) is part of a team that has been awarded one of the #ConnectingMinds grants for their project CIRCEUS. It explores strategies to ensure a globally just and fair EU transition toward climate neutrality and a circular economy. Read more 👇
Colleen Schneider is a PhD student and research assistant at @ecologicalecon.bsky.social 🎓

The good news: Deforestation can be significantly reduced by technology and policy choices:
🔋 Switch to low-impact LFP batteries
🚶 Support public transport, car-sharing & smaller vehicles
🌍 Responsible sourcing from low-deforestation countries, strict due diligence, “no-go zones” for mining
4/6
🌲 Under a business-as-usual scenario, EU EV demand could result in the loss of 65,000 hectares of forest by 2050.
If battery technologies with high deforestation intensity dominate, deforestation could rise up to 118,000 hectares.
3/6
⚒️ While steel and aluminium make up the bulk of metal demand in EVs, it's the battery metals - especially cobalt, nickel, and copper - that drive the highest deforestation impacts.
These impacts vary greatly by battery type.
2/6
🚗 How is the EU’s electric vehicle transition affecting global forest loss?
Our new report models the potential deforestation impacts of the EU’s metal demand for electric vehicles (EVs) from 2025 to 2050.

Reading recommendation for anyone interested in the assessment of environmental and socioeconomic
impacts of mining activities
⬇️
💡 Spatially explicit data is essential for accurately assessing the environmental impacts of lithium mining.
💡 Effective mitigation requires cooperation between lithium-producing and consuming countries.
📄 Read the full paper: pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
💡 Mining-related impacts on greenhouse gas emissions, water use, and land use vary significantly between lithium extraction sites worldwide.
💡 Two-thirds of these impacts are embedded in the international trade of lithium-containing products.
🔋 Lithium is essential for the energy & mobility transitions - but its environmental impacts vary widely across regions and mining sites. 🌍
A new study led by Xin Sun, with co-authors Stefan Giljum, @victormaus.bsky.social, Anna Schomberg, Shaojun Zhang, and Fengqi You, reveals key findings: ⬇️
