Could be for many reasons actually. People do it to seal pencil drawing so that it does not smudge. Or some do it because a bit of the color comes through making the painting water. Or they like to see the white that they are painting. Or perhaps just out of habit

I been trying to make strokes like yours but my paint seems to not run as smoothly. I wonder if it’s do to you don’t a wood canvas or something you do with your paint.

Oh that is a massive increase!
We are not there yet but it’s definitely more expensive. A dinner that I cook for 3 people is on average 25$. That is a lot more than what it was before the pandemic.
