Breakthroughs happen when diverse expertise is woven together. Collaboration can be messy—different vocabularies, different tools—but it’s worth it. We made a video with @MinuteEarth about it. 🎥 @fviromics.bsky.social @payeldas.bsky.social & Drew Kramer #EEID

Multiple Early Career Faculty Positions in Ecology

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for multiple, tenure-track assistant professor positions that will enhance existing institutional excellence in ecology. We are searching broadly for creative and collaborative individuals (1) working at any spatial scale, from local to global, in any system, (2) studying any level of biological organization, from genes to ecosystems, and (3) using any mode of inference, from empirical to theoretical. Applicants should demonstrate research excellence that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries; ongoing growth in the department will emphasize new hires that use quantitative and/or integrative approaches to study ecological processes. Postdoctoral experience is desirable in applicants. Successful candidates will engage with and benefit from UNDERC, Notre Dame’s 8000-acre environmental field station and home to NEON’s Great Lakes domain, superb on-campus chemical and genomic analytical facilities, an experimental research facility located close to campus, cross-disciplinary interactions through multiple centers and institutes including the Environmental Change Initiative, and a unique Interdisciplinary Graduate Training Program in Environment and Society. New faculty will benefit from Notre Dame’s recent campus-wide Strategic Framework that included the Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative. Modern research facilities exist in a new environmental research building, which opened in 2025.

TATAT: a containerized software for generating annotated coding transcriptomes from raw RNA-seq data Motivation: Many transcriptome creation workflows are not standardized, are difficult to install or share, prone to breaking as dependencies update or cease to be maintained and are resource intensive...

🚨 Our team just released a reproducible Docker pipeline for RNAseq assembly and annotation designed for nonmodel organisms!

We're using it to explore how bats manage viral infections, but it's built for broad utility in wildlife transcriptomics. @viralemergence.org

Trump’s NIH And NSF Cuts Estimated To Cost The U.S. Economy $10 Billion Annually Economists find public R&D drives U.S. productivity growth — and pays for itself

Slashing $23B from NIH & NSF isn't fiscal responsibility—it's a $32B economic loss. Science investments return 140–210%, compounding over time. No single administration can claim the credit, but any can cause the damage. Cuts like this aren’t just shortsighted—they’re bad business. bit.ly/dogefail

Why I’m Resigning from the NSF and Library of Congress I cannot participate in systems that require dishonesty as the price of belonging.

NSF is stating that DOGE has the authority to give thumbs up or down to grant applications that experts have systematically vetted. Closed-door deliberations are being observed by DOGE 'consultants', who have accessed the NSF awards system to block the dispersal of approved grants. bit.ly/3Szvv4D

The NSF Is Being Dismantled — With Broad Implications For The American Economy The economic consequences of cuts to the National Science Foundation and restricting scientific inquiry on this scale could be far-reaching.

“The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas — hardly a partisan institution — finds that nondefense government R&D yields long-run economic returns of 150% to 300% …“Our findings therefore point to a misallocation of public capital, and substantial underinvestment in nondefense R&D.”

Are there any:
1) legal funds / organizations giving aid/advice to scientists impacted by federal actions lately?
2) charities giving $ aid to recently laid off federal employees?
(Curious, not that I currently require either myself)
