Mid-week read: How can grassroots dialogue reshape Ireland’s constitutional future?
McEvoy, Todd & Deane show that cross-community deliberation can move debate “beyond ideology and identity.” Small conversations, big impact.

Excellent piece and a must read for the type of person who laughs at the Americans for voting for Trump because of gas prices but then thinks the ‘protests’ in Ireland during the past week were just people venting about petrol prices without any sense of self-awareness.

If these were environmental protesters rather than the far-right, we know how quickly this would have been broken up
Congrats Colin. Fantastic choice!
Congratulations. That’s fantastic news.

BREAKING: Germany has just retracted its intention to intervene in the Gaza genocide case (they can't step away from their arguments in the Myanmar case simply because now Israel is being accused, meaning that it rather says nothing than something that is detrimental for Israel)
An epoch of German philosophy has ended. Even though world famous Habermas still took the time to answer questions of young aspiring academics. An example to live up to. RIP www.faz.net/aktuell/feui...
CJEU press release: Member State legislation which does not permit the amendment of the gender data of one of its nationals who has exercised his or her right to freedom of movement is contrary to EU law A Bulgarian national was registered at birth as being male, with a name, personal identification number and identity documents corresponding to that sex. She currently lives in Italy, where she has begun hormone therapy, and now presents herself as a woman. She instituted proceedings before the Bulgarian courts seeking a declaration that she is a female person and to have her civil status data amended on her birth certificate. Despite the medical opinions and legal assessments confirming the gender identity claimed, her request was rejected. According to national legislation, as interpreted by the plenary assembly of civil chambers of the Bulgarian Supreme Court of Cassation, the term ‘sex’ must be understood in its biological sense, excluding any amendment of the particulars relating to sex, name and identification number. The public interest, based on the moral and/or religious values of Bulgarian society, thus prevails over the interests of transgender persons. Hearing the dispute, the Bulgarian Supreme Court of Cassation has doubts as to the compatibility of that legislation with EU law and has referred the matter to the Court of Justice. In its judgment, the Court holds that EU law precludes legislation of a Member State which does not permit the amendment of the gender data in the civil status registers of one of its nationals who has exercised his or her right to move and reside freely in another Member State. The Court emphasises first of all that, while the issue of identity documents falls within the competence of the Member States, they must exercise that competence in compliance with EU law...
Huge trans rights ruling from the EU's top court - if someone moves to another EU country and transitions, their home country can't refuse to amend their registration details to match their lived gender identity
Amazing. Wonder what the outcome will be.
The ERC-BROKENSONG project at Maynooth University, Ireland, is hiring (two positions - this is the second)! I'm also looking a new research assistant/postdoc to conduct image analysis of the medieval Insular music corpus recovered within the project. See: www.timeshighereducation.com/unijobs/list...
It’s four. SPD will be there too.
The Iceland referendum on EU accession is now slated for 29 August this year.
Note: The referendum will first only be on restarting the negotiations, but clearly a sign of shifting geopolitical thinking.

It is obvious, but we have to say it again and again: The attacks on Iran are a plain violation of the UN Charter.

Both the report and evidence base (see www.parliament.scot/chamber-and-...) are valuable resources in the debate about democratic pathways to an independence referendum.
