The Woodlander Initiative is buying Welsh land for ‘the British people’ – what should shareholders know? Those investing in such purchases, through a group with ties to what The Times called the UK’s largest white supremacist movement, have little control

A company called "The Woodlander Initiative Ltd" (TWI) has been purchasing plots of land in Cymru.

According to HOPE not hate, TWI is “a land-buying scheme aimed at far-right activists and conspiracy theorists with links to Patriotic Alternative (PA), the UK’s largest fascist group”.

On Monday our instagram account was hacked and then deleted. We received a ransom note to recover it; obviously we couldn't and wouldn't pay, and therefore lost thousands of followers. Meta support was useless. But we're BACK with a new account: @littletollerbooks. Can you follow us there and share?

Federico García Lorca, the musician: How the poet elevated flamenco and Spanish folklore A less well-known side of the genius from Granada is his musical talent. He was a great pianist and connoisseur of Andalusian music, whose status he raised with his vision and poetic rhetoric

The music of Federico García Lorca is sometimes forgotten about. An interesting article: english.elpais.com/culture/2023...

What’s in the millions of tonnes of sludge sprayed on to farmland? The answer won’t make you happy | George Monbiot Thanks to breathtaking negligence, the liquid fertiliser used to help grow our food bubbles with a lethal cocktail of toxins, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

A gobsmacking story. Water companies let toxic waste disposers, for cash, dump their loads into sewage farms. The sewage sludge is then spread, untested, on farmland, potentially poisoning vast areas, entire ecosystems and the people (you and me) eating the food.

Amazon rainforest cut down to build highway for COP climate summit The infrastructure required to host climate talks in Belém is undermining the cause, campaigners say.

On top of total capture of COP by the fossil fuel industry, we now have "Amazon forest felled to build road for climate summit."

At what point do we acknowledge what is now plainly obvious: that this is not the solution, but a big part of the problem, a coverup for BAU?

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

@carolehailey.bsky.social shared the best phrase: write like a dog: edit like a cat. I thought this was amazing. You aren’t mauling, you’re making your work precise, balancing it on top of a fence with no chance of falling. And that turned out as a poem. Well, well.

California tribes celebrate historic dam removal: ‘More successful than we ever imagined’ After four dams were blasted from the Klamath River, the work to restore the ecosystem is under way

Hope feels very scarce right now.
Here's some, though: the story of the River Klamath's de-damming––& the speed with which life has poured back to this "bountiful, beautiful watershed" once the water was freed.
A river, re-imagined.

Word of the Day is one I keep posting at the end of the year, hoping its time will come.

‘Respair’, from the 16th century, is fresh hope, and a recovery from despair.

Here’s to a few drops of respair in 2025.

The front cover of late light with a sunset above a green hill and silhouettes of people in the foreground.

I love the way Late Light, by Michael Malay, foregrounds connections in ecosystems, & between us & the land, the importance of being "firmly planted in the world" in "our local places - a river, a woodland, a scrubby field."

What #naturewriting have you read in 2024 that you'd recommend to others?
