Iran announced that it will open the Strait of Hormuz as long as the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire holds and the US and Iran continue to negotiate. Trump has said the US blockade on Iran’s Ports will continue until there’s a deal with Iran on it’s nuclear program. Stocks rose and oil prices fell with news, even though it will take months for supply chains to refurn to pre-war levels. Tufts student, Rumeysa Ozturk, who was kidnapped and detained by the Trump admin due to speaking out on Palestine has moved to Turkey after graduating with her PhD in child study and human development. She said she wanted to go home and not lose “more time to state-imposed violence”

In the same way that training data that included racist and sexist content lead to outputs with racist and sexist outputs- I worry using failed businesses to build systems means we’re going to repeat more of those mistakes.

So like tax breaks for Twitter and other software companies were in a way pushing the use this or we think this is the future vibe… but most cities weren’t like - use square as a point of sale software or rate us on yelp

It seemed the software scales fast assumption meant classic investments in hardware innovation (the sort that helped enable the internet, smart phones, EVs, industrial batteries etc) meant if the government wanted to get the tax gains of new millionaires they also moved towards more software

Decoupling of product goals from consumer preference at the beginning of the social/local/mobile push made so much money because the model of ‘break the law with an app’ (uber, Airbnb, etc) that it made investors more susceptible to trends without a real service (crypto currency, metaverse, AI)

I feel like on the backend there’s been a push to SaaS as opposed to buying a license for a specific version of software that was very clearly driven by VCs not consumer preference- and after they preferred VC feedback over what customers wanted it’s been downhill from there

Not once in the 80s, 90s or 00s do I recall a politician urging the public to embrace email, mobile phones, texting, two factor authentication, online banking, air fryers, or to replace all their cassette collection with a CD collection.

Turns out when we almost eliminated child poverty people felt good, and then when we stopped that felt bad. Weird how having government meaningfully improve people’s lives meant they felt better about the government and their future. Weird. We should do that again

(When I say "the US military sucks" the thing I mean by that is that it is deployed around the world in service of capital and to the detriment of human rights.

The US military sucks but I don't think it will be, uh, better for human rights if the people with the big lethal weapons are starving.

I am a person who definitely thinks we should, like, not have troops doing things like "bombing Iranian civilians" and "blockading the strait of Hormuz" or like any of that shit but I truly do not think you make the situation better by not feeding them.

anyway I think the lesson everyone should be learning here is that DEI was probably really fucking good for the armed forces because it meant you were hearing opinions like "hey so supply chains matter" and "yo maybe the troops should eat a food"

In addition to having a narcissistic tyrant and drunken buffoon as their commanders guiding them into an unauthorized war that’s crashing the global economy and ordering them to commit war crimes by bombing civilians in an unclear mission - they’re also not being fed properly while doing it.
