Based on some quick math, this alone could fund the NSF Plant Genome Research Program for ~4 years; the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology, which was totally axed in the NSF budget request, for ~9 years; and ~ half the total NSF GRFP budget

"NIH funding is gone, so you should pivot to private foundations for funding"
Meanwhile, private foundations:
When we take measures to address the racial bias that has allowed whites to enjoy privilege, they call our survival mechanisms 'racial bias.' Pure hypocrisy.

Due to maintenance, Research.gov (including access to NSF-PAR, GRFP, PES, and ETAP) will be unavailable from Fri., 4/25 at 10:00 PM ET to Sat., 4/26 at 1:00 PM ET. NSF apologizes for any inconvenience.
🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees:
Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and…
1. Download your NSF award letters.
2. Print PDF your annual reports.
3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports.
NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov
What an incredible show of the power we have, together! Thank you to all who came out to say "Hands Off Our Science!"
Let's keep up the pressure and continue the momentum.
Onward, Dorks!

🧵Yesterday, I received notice that my #NIH grant, on the social environment, lifecourse, epigenetics & #birthoutcomes in Black families, was terminated. This grant represented a critical effort to address the ⬆️ rates of maternal & infant mortality in the US, particularly among Black mothers & babies
Something to think about
Dealing with this in my lab as well. 😒
I am livid that my student who submitted a diversity F31 and received an outstanding score, near the top of the fundable range, was told to submit again.
Refusing to fund F31s from URMs while funding regular F31s from white/privileged students with worse scores is blatant discrimination.
One of the questions after my talk today was about scientists refusing to buck the administration because they fear losing their jobs.
I said that a lot of self-styled apolitical scientists lost their jobs this week, so silence will not save them. Respond and keep your values and dignity.
Trump and Musk are killing cancer research AND they want you and your kids to get sick and die.
I hope this statement means that ASM will work to rebuild trust among members.
Office desk without any personal items or decor
Today, along with 2,000 other NIH employees, I had to clear out my office 😭
It was truly the honor of my life to work with such incredibly passionate people focused on improving human health. I’ve never experienced a more positive culture where *everyone* cared about their job and serving others.

Happy Black History Month from the Black Microbiologists Association
Happy BHM! Celebrating our history and taking pride and joy in the contribution of Black Americans to this society has been and will continue to be a form of resistance

34 states have a university or healthcare system as their top or 2nd top employer.
Some ppl are suggesting reviewers take a stand- if the diversity F31s can’t be reviewed this cycle then no F31s should be reviewed. I know none of us wants to slow things down after panels finally restarted, but this seems like the only fair approach to me. Wait till next cycle to consider everyone.
It looks like it was sent to “leadership” so regional ASM officers and national volunteers?
ASM town hall Thursday 2/13 at 3PM eastern time
Haven’t seen this circulating here yet, but @asm.org is hosting a town hall next Thursday to address recent events concerning executive orders
NEWS:
HHMI is axing a program to increase inclusivity in science education
It also wiped its website of mentions of that program and language in some other programs about diversity/inclusivity 🧪

I don't know who needs to hear this, but none of the preemptive obedience is going to save us.
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the nation’s largest private funder of biomedical research, yesterday killed a $60 million program aimed at making universities’ STEM education more inclusive. scim.ag/3EtS0US
wait, are we siblings?
"The first rule of research administration is [generally scientists don't know much about it]" Time for that to change
Dear US scientists,
We've been hearing a lot of questions of the form
"Why aren't universities doing anything!? They need to speak out!"
We can explain.
It's bad news. We're on our own. But understanding why can help us all figure out our plan.

Hi all, I am in contact with a reporter at Science magazine who would like to talk with a trainee or mentor who successfully applied for an equity/DEI-related NIH training grant or a training supplement but have not received the Notice of Award and probably won't get the grant.
