There is one really bad AGI-doubter/X-risk-doubter argument that really grinds my gears.

The argument basically, is that perfectly *simulating/emulating* human cognition would be computationally intractable.

And like... ok maybe. But that's completely beside the point.

"It would be a sign of deep wrongness..."

Feel kinda rude to just completely sidestep someone's point like this.

No, just vote for Platner, silly

Yeah, I would say he's a leftist darling. I only hopped on Bsky today because people on twitter were joking about how Bskyers are somehow living in a weird pocket reality when it comes to Platner.

leftists everywhere else think he's fantastic.

So when it's 2025 and everyone in the center-left is rallying around Gavin Newsom as this psychopathic tough guy who's gonna Mog the fuck outta Trump for us. The left-flank also wants our own Gavin!! But we got none. But then Platner appears.

Bernie was that guy for us, but he's too old now. You could argue Warren was on our side too, but she's aging out as well. AOC is the next big star of the far-left, but we still worry about her. We worry that she's still too young. That America isn't ready for a woman president.

Lastly, Platner is such a big deal for the left-flank of the democratic party because we are in a bit of a crisis. We are coming up on our biggest opportunity to change US politics in almost a century, and we do it without a clear leader.

For optics-obsessed leftists like myself, the dream is to be able to have candidates whose aesthetic branding appeals to a wider swath of America, while still maintaining the core left-populist substance that we really care about.

As a trans women, I would say no I do not embrace MAGAs core gender politics. But as a sane person hinged to reality, I recognize that the Democratic Party has been bleeding men (and not the datamale dweebs, mostly). I think it would help to win them back.

I won't lie and pretend his Aesthetic has nothing to do with his success. Modern politics is about Marketing and Branding. But I don't think you're reading it right. He doesn't make dweebs on the left feel tough. But he's what we think will appeal to blue collar people

These aren't vaguely populist. These are squarely far-left ideologies. And we have socialists in the democratic party!! AOC is a socialist. Bernie Sanders is a Socialist. Zohran Mamdani is a Socialist.

Given they are all quite popular, I'm not sure what the confusion is.

You talk about "vaguely populist bro politics" and I just think you are fundamentally mistaken. Maybe I would be more worried if he only showed evidence of being vaguely populist, but as his reddit comments show, he identified as "socialist" and "communist"

Fireside Chat: FDR's Legacy and the Democratic Party
Fireside Chat: FDR's Legacy and the Democratic Party YouTube video by Graham Platner for Senate

If you want to hear in more detail what he believes and what motivates him, you can just listen to some of his videos!! He makes more conversational public communication than the vast majority of candidates, so I don't understand this gripe.

Here's an example:

In some of these posts Platner says ordinary left-wing stuff. In other's he openly identifies as "Socialist" or even "Communist"

At a minimum we can be certain the Platner has been *very* left wing for like 5 years. Likely much longer.

Ok, Will. I can explain 🧵

1. Platner did not just suddenly wake up saying the right words. We know this because of the leaked content from his reddit account "P-Hustle". The leak contained posts/replies going back even to 2018 in some cases.

Not even an IQ-check. An over-defensiveness check. People will do this dumbed-down technicality type thing knowing full well that it's meaningless. It's just grasping for a way to feel like you have a way to respond without conceding in the moment

The case where Republicans have a big edge is one where they can just dominate the airwaves with fearmongering against a nebulous threat. That doesn't work when there is daily reporting about normal people getting disappeared and the administration is bragging about it instead of covering it up

Today, the UN officially designated Israel’s assault on Gaza as a genocide.

As a party to the Genocide Convention, the U.S. has a legal obligation to obey our own laws, stop weapons sales to Israel, and demand a permanent ceasefire.

End the genocide. Ceasefire now.

the assassination of charlie kirk is just a distraction.

ICE is raiding immigrant communities, and Congress is dismantling trans healthcare.

Now that Kirk's killer seems to be caught, maybe the news could spare a moment's attention for the right wing, from the commentariat up to the GOP and president, whose immediate reaction was not mourning, but to seize the opportunity to try to incite violence against groups they hate
