Record year for gang busts and knife seizures New figures show a record year for County Lines enforcement, with more gang leaders charged and knives seized than ever before, backed by £34m in new funding.

Enforcement has seen:

+ 25% reduction in hospital admissions for stabbings

+ preventing 800 stabbings a year

+ phone lines used permanently closed

On knife crime Labour have done lots already, but will also soon launch their new 'Protecting Lives, Building Hope' plan to cut knife crime further.

The deal is mandated by international law so it will happen. But the bill may have to be redrafted or a renegotiated deal with the US in place.

The Conservative Lords have tabled a wrecking amendment - Labour does not have a Lords majority so the bill may well fail. The Lords debate has been postponed

This, from the Home Office strategy "Having a Sensible Conversation about Immigration" is really good: sensible, balanced and evidence-based.

Exactly the right approach for a centre-left government.

Happy Winter Solstice. The light is coming!

This is the Holly King who is now at the peak of his powers. Fortunately his ascension is complete so we can look forward to the emergence of the Oak King and moving into the light.

I had never even heard a hint that generational upward mobility had been higher in the UK than in the US for decades, until seeing that second chart.

That Tom Gauld meme of the two opposing nations perfectly mirrored, but edited to be between archives and museums.

Just published - we're slowly losing something we didn't know we had: a street light designed just for London. I've taken a deep (and deeply geeky) dive into the history of an everyday object that was designed not to be noticed. #london roadsorguk.substack.com/p/london-in-...

The Overshoot What happens to politics, and the country, as net migration collapses?

New post just out:

"The Overshoot"

Net migration is collapsing, and will fall further over the coming years. We could even have net emigration.

What does that mean for the country and the political narrative as we head towards the next election?

Trafalgar Sq today. A Christmas market, lovely Norwegian tree decorated in Scandinavian style, a large nativity scene, children singing carols to raise money for the homeless & also a massive Hannukah menorah, three candles lit. No flags. No slogans. No right-wing thugs. Christmas in full swing.

Government launches national conversation on SEND Government acts on commitment to put parents’ experiences at the heart of SEND reform through new public engagement campaign.

This is excellent news. The SEND system is on it's knees, woefully underfunded by the previous government with Local Authorities unable to fund provision properly, being bankrupted by trying to do so. Money is not the whole answer - this is an excellent start. www.gov.uk/government/n...

I do things with the hand that seems most natural, and after nearly 70 years that's become the hand that does that thing. I write with my right hand (having had my left hand tied at school to force me) although I can right with both, I attempt to play guitar left handed, bowl (cricket) rh, etc.

Sheffield Wednesday fans hold Chansiri protest ahead of home game Fans want owner Dejphon Chansiri to sell the club following a turbulent time.

A great many more people protested the plight of Sheffield Wednesday this month than have attended any protest against asylum hotels

100% agree. Rather than making me feel patriotic I feel they besmirch my country, of which I'm proud.

Email is Easy Everyone knows what an email address is, right?

Learned about e-mail.wtf from @sharonodea.com it reminded me about Google's ridiculous email validation which ignores dots in the local part to create an address so allows me in the UK to create stephen.way@ and some idiot in Texas to create stephenway@ as two addresses.

Have a go! (I scored 20/21)
