Especially odd since the city has been actively redeveloping commuter parking lots at Vic Park, Warden, Wilson, Islington and more.

Shawn Micallef: Toronto’s main drag is a real drag. So why is the Yonge Street redesign taking the slow road? The sluggish pace of the transformation Toronto’s most famous street is in sharp contrast to how quickly Church Street is set to become pedestrianized.

"The timeline for a scaled-backed yongeTOmorrow is also tediously long, with tendering for construction starting in 2030 or later. Toronto should install temporary measures to create more space for pedestrians like New York did nearly 20 years ago."

Cops keep showing up to arts events about Palestine. What can organizers do? Toronto police showed up at a comedy fundraiser and at a film screening on the same night in April. Organizers describe how this fits into a broader pattern and what can be done to protect community…

Toronto: What we’re seeing now is that (police) are not even distinguishing between protests, academic events or cultural events. Any time there are Palestinians speaking about Palestine, they are viewed as potentially anti-semitic or promoting violence.” www.thegrindmag.ca/cops-keep-sh...

These are the types of raised/tabled crossings that I want US cities to start building. They're continuous for people walking and biking instead of continuous for drivers (even if they're raised up).

Many pols are quite happy with endless studies and strategies which avoids having to commit capital. And consultants are fine with redoing a study/design ad infinitum.

Good thread, it touches on the interplay between public engagement and the political process, which is a big part of the problem. Too many engagement processes are used as cover for *not* making a decision.

All elevators at TTC subway stations out of service Approximately 67 of the TTC's 70 subway stations currently have elevator access to train platforms.

You can’t spend years trying to force people off door-to-door Wheeltrans service if you don’t have working elevators.

This isn’t an “inconvenience,” it’s an affront to everyone with accessibility needs.

Giving a damn is big. Also, buildings designed before AC relied on natural ventilation (and lighting) more, which turns out, makes people feel better.

"Toronto’s not inventing something new here, just trying to catch up to other cities in Canada and around the world," writes @shawnmicallef.bsky.social.

A large crowd as always at the weekly march in Tbilisi. Georgians have been protesting in 8+ cities every day for the last 507 days.

If you include parking, then there will be “too much traffic”. If you don’t include parking, “where will everyone park?”. Rinse and repeat.

Americans are using $2M Patriots to shoot down drones. Meanwhile, Ukrainians just hang out of a 40 year old training plane, firing a shotgun.

Similar case in Poland where PiS implemented many social welfare policies, agrarian subsidies and nationalized key industries, while being socially conservative around abortion, gay rights or support for the Catholic Church.

Not too different from the various power centres currently stuck because they made long term commitments to their big tenants. Many leases include clauses about visibility from the highway or number of parking spots which makes it difficult to even do partial infill development.

Whoever installs these would be looking for a long term lease that you’d need to break.

This was such an incredibly powerful conversation about two peoples who know harsh winters, famines, settler colonialism, the crucial importance of good neighbourly relations and mutual support for survival, resistance and community. Do have a listen

I often hear from planners that big homes aren't needed as family sizes are shrinking. Yet the number of families with 3+ kids is rising. Those families are disproportionately made up of people of colour and new Canadians, groups underrepresented in the planning profession.
