...will kill open source OS like Linux
Already, some groups are refusing to allow downloads of their open source software for fear of being fined
This reduces competition, and it will not protect children the way they hope

In an effort to try and protect children, a new layer of surveillance on ALL devices is proposed
Teens will easily evade this software (much as they do parental controls now)
Meanwhile, corps and the gov will use this to trade in our private data
It also...

This law proposes to create software to identify ghost gun files and prevent them from printing on 3D tools
The software doesn't exist, any software will be easy to circumvent, or it will block legit files
In the meantime, OEMs will stop selling tolls in CA
.@katieporterca.bsky.social is Katie willing to pledge to fight CA AB 2047 and 1043?
These laws propose unreasonable tech solutions to problems which don't even exist, and will only lead to unintended consequences
In other news, the US Navy is no longer buying citrus, and the Marines budget for neck leather has been slashed
This is Jemma and Bean. Jemma likes to eat her cheese snacks. Bean prefers to eliminate hers. 13/10 for both (TT: bjkuhn)
(and yes, there is already A LOT of dystopic data sharing with US corps, how much worse could it be? let's just say, if I was a Chinese dissident living in the US, I would not want to drive a Chinese made vehicle with self-driving)
We can't hope to counter it, but we could get *some* jobs in the US with a smart policy
Do I worry about sending out my data to the CCP through Chinese products? Sure, but that's already happening with phones
I guess I would want to limit self driving tech in US sold Chinese cars
It's simply the cost of US labor and safety practices
But, if the cars are better than US OEM offerings for the same price, it *might* kick them in the butt to do better on the low end
Or maybe they will just abandon that permanently
The ship of Chinese manufacturing dominance has set sail
My current hope lay with companies like Slate, who offer a bare bones trucklet (really, closer to a ute), but it will still be around $25K
If Chinese manufacturers start building in the US, which they should be required to do if they sell here, it's unlikely cars will be less than that
What's more, OEMs increasingly want to earn money off subscription functions and locking 3rd party mechanics out of business
They fear monger, saying if you let them work on your car, they will steal your data
Because OEMs already sell it
1st, we are about to have a huge glut of affordable off-lease EVs, in about a year or so
I got my Fiat 500e off lease for $10K in 2019 dollars, and it's generally been a good experience (save for one $1500 repair)
It's true, however, that cars are more complex than ever
What if the rapture already happened, but it was just one person?
Very glad I sold them stocks
I think lightning is a common foe of the TV (and the radio)
Taking the father-son "We need to watch sports in order to connect emotionally" to a whole new level
Good job
I never expressed that, either
But no, it just froze up and eventually had to restart. It's happen quite a few times, and while back in the day cable TV and antenna TV had problems, maybe the same number, the TV itself continued to work
"My TV just crashed"
is not a sentence I ever uttered growing up
That is certainly true, but it doesn't tell the whole story
Vocational training gives a leg up easily as much as college used to
Plus, given how many jobs like auto mechanic require computer skills, and biz generally requires more than manual labor, education is still key to success
Yes, I believe this is a result of the denigration of any job that includes manual labor
It doesn't sound exciting
Better to be a lawyer, I guess
But plumbers are essential
It shouldn't have to be one or the other (I've only read the title), but there's not enough support of vocational training in the US
Vocations requiring people, like plumbing, electrical, health, etc. will be last to be impacted by the coming AI/robotic wave, due to the variability of environments
...executive power, and he was ignored.
The playbook currently in use was, in fact, initiated by Democratic and Liberal officials
It's not that they are to blame, per se. It's that we have to consider the consequences of acting in legal gray areas on the legacy of a country of laws
...of the Courts or Congress, after 2000 it became noticeable that the practice of many Liberal officials was to do or not do things out of principle, and see if the Courts or Congress could catch up
Pres. Obama warned us about some of this, challenged Congress and the people to reign in...
Meanwhile, while Republicans and Conservatives were executing their long term plan to remake the courts, Democrats and Liberals revealed a tool that MAGA is now using extensively: acting between the lines

...common practice and precedent, or generated legislatively. They are easy to change (compared to Amendments to the Constitution).
First, the Constitution is pretty loose on how the Court should work. In theory, an activist Congress of any stripe could completely dismantle and reformulate the courts. SCOTUS could be one judge or 100. District and Circuit Courts could disappear. All of the rules SCOTUS follows are either...
We have to consider how we go to this place
BTW, I rate this production as:
