Artemis II: a planetary perspective for a new generation Artemis II’s striking images of Earth from lunar distance revive awe in space exploration while revealing our planet as a fragile, borderless world that calls for shared responsibility, argues Ian Cra...

"There are no political borders visible from space, and such borders have no objective meaning in a planetary context."

the thing about our current moment is that yes, the anti-AI and anti-big tech people are getting very reactive nowadays - but have you seen what they’re *reacting* to?

Pancreatic cancer mRNA vaccine shows lasting results in an early trial Scientists caution that more research is needed, but nearly all of the patients who responded to the personalized vaccine are still alive six years later.

Reminder: The Trump regime cancelled nearly $500 million in federal contracts for mRNA vaccine development last year.

A peer reviewed study shows a promising link between flu and shingles vaccines and a reduced risk of dementia. A heroin addict who cut off a raccoon’s penis for “further study” says these vaccines cause autism. For busy Americans, it can be hard to know who to trust.

Something to be said about politicians and pundits taking AI developers' apocalypse preaching more seriously than decades of very good climate science

As wealth concentrates, so does power — the power to influence elections, shape policy, tilt markets and define the terms of public debate.

Taxing billionaires is not radical.

What is radical is allowing a system where extreme wealth exists alongside widespread hardship.

"This is what you get when you elect Republicans."

Every Dem within 100 feet of a camera needs to be saying this repeatedly.

Every time we elect Republicans, we get dumbass wars, tax cuts for rich people, and financial crises. Every time.

Fucking say it!

You have more in common with the people of Iran than you do with anyone in this administration, any member of the technocracy, anyone who is profiting from this war, or any billionaire. When you see Iranians forming human chains outside key infrastructure sites, you should feel a sense of kinship.

[The Apollo 11 plaque] reads: "We came in peace for all Mankind." As the United States was dropping 7 ½ megatons of conventional explosives on small nations in Southeast Asia, we congratulated ourselves on our humanity. We would harm no one on a lifeless rock. - Carl Sagan

Yes, but on the generation side this all needs carbon free electric generation capacity (and energy storage). So I agree with your premise that minimizing peaks in cooling dominant climates does have financial benefits.

The electric grid there is already sized for summer cooling peaks. In colder climates, converting to air source heat pumps makes the winter electricity demand peak higher than the summer peak, meaning grid upgrades are required. The avoided grid cost in cold climates can offset the cost of geo wells

That’s true, along with the potential for seasonal thermal energy storage in certain geologies

Thanks for sharing. I’m working in Philadelphia on this issue, and don’t know of any similar studies/models that have been done here. Though the climates is close enough to NYC that the conclusion will likely be the same.

Do you have any rules of thumb for saying if a city’s climate is cold enough to make geo-exchange attractive compared to air source heat pumps? Would it be based on minimum winter design OA temperature, since that sets the peak electricity demand for air source?

'No air defenses': Trump, Hegseth touted American dominance in Iran before jet was downed Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth repeatedly claimed Tehran’s anti-aircraft defenses were taken out by American forces.

"We could hit it and it would be gone, and there's not a thing they could do about it. They have no anti-aircraft equipment. Their radar is 100% annihilated," said Trump in his address to the nation, just days before Iran downed an F-15 and an A-10 and struck two Black Hawk helicopters.
