I built an interactive guide on how Shazam (the music identification app) works!
This is the next installment in my newly coined "How The Heck?" series, where we explore everyday tech that can feel like magic (QR Codes, GPS, and now this one).
Hope you enjoy it!

Dear #BlueWizards, @vladvexler.bsky.social is right to be worried. I am also worried a post-Trump world will still be anti-democratic

This story is wild! An imposter has been impersonating ProPublica reporter @robert-faturechi.bsky.social and he tries to figure out who it is.
A remarkable article. I wonder do the protesters know who their fellow travellers are? Lot of useful idiots out there. Government cannot start negotiating with them even if they knew with whom to negotiate. www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2026...

“Can’t a sitting president come watch an oral argument at the Supreme Court? You know how much I love an oral argument. I am a big fan of the law. I like the faint, wheezing sound it makes as I trample on it, and the mountains of litigation that result.”
Great laugh from @petridishes.bsky.social
Let me tell you a tale of how completely the normies have been mobilized. My 14 year-old niece has done School of Rock for the past 5 years; last summer she was part of their touring band, and the kids loved playing together so much that they decided to keep doing it. (1/?)
It should not take a court order to get a toddler out of a prison.
They’re taking kids from Minnesota and sending them to detention camps. They’re shooting American citizens in the street and locking investigators out of the crime scenes. The world is watching what happens next.
Just experienced the most intense tear gassing of my life by federal officers outside the ICE facility in Portland where marchers gathered. There was no fast exit as they indiscriminately threw loads of gas and flash bangs. Children were in the crowd screaming. @oregoncapitalchronicle.com

The hesitation to use the word should be gone. Jonathan Rauch held out for years, calling it "gangsterism." Now he admits the reality. "Fascism is not a territory with clearly marked boundaries but a constellation of characteristics." The constellation is visible. 🧵

I'm at a loss for words. I'm glad someone else has them.
Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.
Hi everyone -- there is a general strike in Minnesota tomorrow to protest what the Trump administration and DHS are doing to our community. In solidarity with the action, I am going to donate my revenue from tmrw's newsletter to People over Papers, the Midway-Hamline Diaper Bank, & Every Meal. (1/2)
"Ask anyone who has lived in a country that became an autocracy, and they will tell you some version of a story about walls closing in on them, about space getting smaller and smaller. The space they are talking about is freedom." www.nytimes.com/2026/01/18/o...

🧵In my expert opinion as a researcher of vehicle ramming attacks, what has been publicly described in the video evidence does not support the claim that Renee Nicole Good was attempting a deliberate ramming attack when she was shot in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. 1/7
Here is a video of a frozen creek that had begun to thaw, and the water was flowing beneath the thin ice on top. I took this because it was soothing and wonderfully bloopy and I wanted to listen to it for hours. You are all welcome to enjoy it, too. Let your brain settle here and rest for a moment.
We've analysed this video of the shooting of Renee Nicole Good yesterday in Minneapolis frame-by-frame to highlight the positioning of the gun and phone in the ICE agent's hands.

This kind of thing does point out a real ethical dilemma: block or mute?
I'm sorry I keep saying this, but it's sooo important: Mark Kelly is expressing contempt for the One Special Boy in the White House. We need to hear that. Men, especially *young* men, need to hear that. Listen to his voice. C O N T E M P T.
For World AIDS Day, here is a story I have written out and deleted several times over. It’s still, nearly 30 years on, tender-feeling. But not necessarily sad.
Except that all its component parts are, in fact, very sad. 🧵
Sen. Mark Kelly: “I’ve had a missile blow up next to my airplane. I’ve been nearly shot down multiple times. I’ve flown a rocket ship into space four times, built by the lowest bidder. I’m not going to be silenced by Donald Trump.”
Watching this press conference between Trump and MBS.
Trump’s answers on Khashoggi’s murder are absolutely vile.
Daniel Kinahan is one of the most powerful cocaine traffickers in the world—but he lives a strikingly public life in Dubai, shopping at malls and consorting with famous boxers like Tyson Fury. nyer.cm/XjUJEti
