It’s all dirtier than it looks

"To put it bluntly, an X post today receives less than 3% of the views a single tweet delivered seven years ago."
If you think it is necessary to be on Twitter to communicate your fact-based worldview, the reality is that worldview is being smothered.
The Alberta government is now considering some level of book restrictions in public libraries, not just schools. And once again they are taking aim at LGBTQ2S+ books.
Don't forget where this focus came from.
It was never actually about "concerned parents."

Huge pet peeve: No, “Harvard University” didn’t publish a study, and nor is it proper to say that it is “according to Nature.”
Universities don’t publish studies, professors do. And unless it’s an editorial, journals don’t say things either—authors do.
Many thanks to Nicole & Trevor @cfcj-fcjc.bsky.social for sharing this post today about the loss of Lisa Moore and her contributions to the A2J movement. I honestly can't recall a time when Lisa wasn't writing or relaying a Slaw column. :(
Tumbler Ridge is a small planned resource community, a winding 90 minute drive from the nearest city of at least 10,000 people.
A massive number of people are going to descend there tomorrow.
May those that arrive have respect and grace for the unimaginable grief.
During an ongoing press conference, B.C. Premier David Eby says RCMP officers were on the scene of the Tumbler Ridge shooting very quickly - within 2 minutes of reports coming in.

Saturday’s disconnect.
It’s the big day! The appeal hearing @cycletoronto.bsky.social’s successful Bill 212 case is being heard at Ontario’s Court of Appeal. Time permitting I’ll try and live post the proceedings, like I did for the Ottawa convey injunctions back when #lawtwitter was a thing.
"The Manitoba government will be opening a new service hub in Winnipeg that brings together legal and family justice services in French, aimed at making it easier for francophones to access justice supports in their own language."

I love that Bluesky has such a robust legal-journalistic culture now that we have at least three people live-posting this court hearing on the Minneapolis ICE deployment!

Clawbies 2025: Announcing the 20th Anniversary Canadian Law Blog Awards www.clawbies.ca/2025/12/claw...
This year's @ablawg.bsky.social year in review post has lots to say about the state of democracy in Alberta and elsewhere, a major theme on the blog this year. Wishing all our readers a 2026 in which state actors are held to the highest standards of democratic accountability and justice.
Pleased to say the finalized #clawbies2025 awards post is now scheduled for 6 AM EST tomorrow morning. You'll be able to read about all the winners on Clawbies.ca

"Ngai Pindell stepping down as Allard Law Dean in summer 2026"
We'll give it due consideration.... but I've got to get it past @jordanfurlong.com and he's mean!
There's one more day to make your Clawbie nominations, please let us know what Canadian legal blogs, podcasts, and social media accounts you've been paying attention to this year by posting here with the #clawbies2025 hashtag. The deadline is Dec. 15 (for more information: www.clawbies.ca).
My nominations for the 2025 Clawbies:
- @mgeist.bsky.social for LawBytes, a podcast I have found indispensable for years — celebrating its 250th episode this year.
- @privacylawyer.ca for his outstanding YouTube channel, Privacy Guy — enormously informative and insightful.
#clawbies2025
Sadly I predict a bill targeting universities in the new year. There’s the Mintz report, and Bill 13 limits DEI, cultural competency training and more for professional regulators, as well as the ability to sanction members for expression (this is their “Jordan Peterson” law). We are likely next.
December has snuck up on me. I'm putting together my list of nominations for #Clawbies2025 (The Canadian legal blog etc. awards), and you should too. Thanks to @steveamatthews.bsky.social @jordanfurlong.com and @parallaxinfo.bsky.social for their shout-out as an early Canadian legal blogger.
