I'm so honored to have received this award in memory of Frans de Waal for my PhD thesis! His work (and briefly working with him) truly shaped my scientific thinking and research.

Definitely me crying because I’m giving a talk at the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behaviour and a bunch of scientists show up to listen to my silly little thoughts

A picture of a round black-framed mirror on a blue wall. A tiny woman emerges in the bottom third of the reflection, taking a selfie with the phone in front of her face.

You know you’re in Germany when you can barely see yourself in the hotel mirror.

For sure! Also: they understand these terms differently (in a much less demanding sense).

An interesting point of comparison: amongst comparative psychologists it’s generally uncontroversial that animals have beliefs and concepts, which many philosophers are sceptical about!

This 100%. Good science requires good philosophy.

Very happy to see this out in the world! A summary of one of my favourite publications, which I co-authored with the stellar @ldanon.bsky.social, so hopefully it will pique people's interest!

(You can read it or listen to a very cringeworthy recording by yours truly)

I feel you. All the accounts of dogs eating their dead caretakers' faces that I had to research for my book were in forensic journals and included close-ups of said faces. Not a nice experience.
