And by “Let Your Garden Grow” I, of course, meant Make Our Garden Grow.
Apologies to Candide, Cunegonde and of course Leonard Bernstein - who sadly never took my suggestion to instead title the composition “I Like Gardening and Stuff.”
(That’s the message of the show, right?)

A spectacular afternoon recording the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic and @alexchoral.bsky.social putting on American Voices - including Bernstein’s Let Your Garden Grow.
(We’re big Bernstein fans. How can you not be?)
❄️☃️ Winter weather. Piano recital. Debussy. It’s a whole mood.

🎥 Filming a housing affordability mini doc … in a historic 1918 Sears Modern Home!
From 1908 to 1942 Sears sold more than 70,000 of these assemble-it-yourself homes. You purchased via mail order catalog and received a kit via rail freight with all of the materials necessary to build your own home.
🗣️ 480 singers from 8 Alexandria choirs singing together in Schlesinger Hall at One Voice Alexandria. Bravo to @alexchoral.bsky.social on organizing a beautiful choral festival!
And major props to the educators & directors who have made Alexandria such a nexus of choral arts. Y’all kick ASS.
It’s the little things that make you love working in a venue 🤌🤌
👉 Bass instruments can be captured individually for a cleaner low end.
👉 Directional spot microphones can bring more clarity and mix flexibility to the piano, the singers, or quieter instruments.
And, and, and, and…..
(We’ll leave it there for now)
(Be well!)
Of course the work doesn’t stop there!
👉 A main NOS pair can be enhanced with a spaced pair of omnidirectional microphones to capture more “space.”
👉 Orchestras shine with additional microphones placed further out on the “flanks” of the ensemble.
👉 Mid-Side allows the stereo width to be modified in post, but the image & localization don’t feel spacious & realistic.
👉 Near-coincident techniques like (like NOS) offer a fantastic balance of spacious stereo, precise localization, & an engaging sonic impression. They’re usually our go to!
👉 A/B (spaced pair) creates a very spacious sound but produces relatively indistinct stereo imaging and may have significant phasing issues.
👉 X-Y (coincident pair) has no phasing issues and great mono compatibility, but generally produces a narrow stereo image.
🎤 A great concert recording starts with a well placed main pair of microphones. 🎤
So, what’s the thought process? Here’s a peek behind the curtain.
Over the past 70 years audio engineers have developed a bevy of ways to arrange them for stereo sound, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.
