Just had an amazing time going back to my alma mater Northern Illinois University and their Computer Science department to talk about Spring and careers! Thanks for having me!

But net new generation that requires the use of tools to do so, there is still a gap. Don't get me wrong. I've watched how fast AI has closed the gaps every time one is identified. MCP and tool calling is still super early. That gap will close fast.

I've seen many articles about the use of AI to replace jobs or automate tasks. I think the most fundamental bit of that for me is that AI is good at jobs that are primarily interpretation of existing conditions. Analyze logs. Review contracts. Answer questions based on documentation. All good.

Add to that, the techniques they use are more complex (using complex formulas instead of simple features) which makes validation more complex as well.

Been spending quite a bit of time lately using MCP tools with various models. It's clear to me that as of today, plugging "dumb" tools (simple SQL tools at a database for example) into a model isn't good enough. I currently get a lot of plausible, but inaccurate results.

Fortunately I didn’t need it and my tubing cutter took care of the job.

Related to my previous post, I keep thinking about AI and IDE interactions like paired programming. Right now, I am the observer and the AI is the driver. I would love to see that interaction flipped.

Does anyone have a demo of an IDE that has AI interactions that are more than just generating CRUD scaffolds? Most of the AI IDE interactions I see right now feel like a fancy Rails demo from 2005.

Why Skepticism About College Is Hard to Shake Americans’ feelings about the benefits of higher education don’t always match the facts.

Really disappointed in this article from @theatlantic.com about higher ed. It completely ignores the most basic reason for skepticism: cost. Costs have increased 169% since 1980 but entry level wages are inly up 19% in the same period. Something has to give. www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...

How Stanford Teaches AI-Powered Creativity in Just 13 MinutesㅣJeremy Utley YouTube video by EO

This video outlines my biggest issue with AI code tools today. We are expected to use them as tools. That results me spending time trying to manipulate that tool to get what I want. I want AI to be my teammate, to be the observer in my paired programming session. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv77...

I don't understand why companies that create wifi devices can't follow the spec and limit password lengths for arbitrary reasons.

I remember the first time I went to a hacker conference. It was one of the first times in my life I didn’t feel out of place. Awesome to see your kids get that experience!
