My interview with Wendy Sue Noah formerly of Fujitsu/Avaterra who worked on WorldsAway is now available for everyone.
We chatted about Silicon Valley in the mid 90's, working at match.com as a startup. Bringing the online dating sphere to WorldsAway and more.

Check out this footage of WorldsAway from May 1995 taken from a demo created to drum up hype before the beta began:

I miss chat rooms.
A screenshot of the WorldsAway world known as the Dreamscape circa 1996. Created and operated by Fujitsu via CompuServe. This scene depicts 5 avatars speaking by a fountain wearing various colorful clothing and unique heads. A ghost can be seen observing the region in the sky and a teleporter device can be seen in the background.

Doing a little bit of organizing. Got all of the Lucasfilm's Habitat and Club Caribe footage in one place now, as well as uploaded an hour and a half of never-before-seen Caribe beta footage.
Read more about it after the jump.

I don't think people understand what a novel idea this was back in the 80's. It was earth shattering.
The price was insane, but the pioneering work that happened with Habitat spawned so many different things that we still enjoy to this day.
You can play Habitat today over at neohabitat.org
I discovered source code for the Club Caribe virtual world server, a modified version of Lucasfilm's Habitat on the C64 which ran on Quantum Link (AOL) back in the late 1980's and early 1990's.
I've uploaded it to GitHub and written about it here:

A scene from the WorldsAway virtual world known as VZConnections. Taken sometime circa late 1999 or early 2000. Avatars gather in a park to play bingo with each other for prizes and ingame currency known as tokens.

WA had a plugin API that allowed external developers to create games for the world.
If anyone knows of any virtual world, game preservation or gaming starter packs that this account could be added to, please DM me or just add me.
I'm going to be posting regular content on here moving forward.

Hey everyone, I ( @stublad.bsky.social ) created this account for my website, renoproject.org
I document the history of a subsection of virtual worlds from the 1980's thru to the 2000's, beginning with Lucasfilm's Habitat, the first ever graphical virtual world (and proto MMO)
Check it out!
