Can’t wait to see it!

There’s a lot of deeply ignorant people in this thread who apparently think their phones run on unicorn farts and magic and should last a millennium at no extra cost but what can you do? 🤷🏼‍♀️ And as an IT professional this surprises me not at all.

I think you should probably pay a visit to your neighbourhood phone repair shop. You might be amazed at how high tech they’re not. And I think the last battery I needed solder for was my Palm PDA in the early 2000s

No. You’re being obtuse. You apparently want all the latest bells and whistles on hardware that simply isn’t capable of it. You have to choose one or the other.

Machines were much bigger and heavier when you could swap out parts for upgrades. I used to do it for a living but people want sleek, light and portable now, so boards are integrated. How much would you be willing to pay for something so niche that production runs would be tiny?

But those devices are still usable. Just not at the level of a newer device. You can’t have it both ways. Hardware has limitations, even when it comes to security standards.

Because the vast majority want more features that need more RAM and more CPU/GPU power. Technology can’t be expected to slow itself to the lowest common denominator for a minority of its audience. If you only want a phone that makes calls you can have that but most people want more.

They make useful tools just like many other companies. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve never had an issue looking after the tools I need when I can, or paying someone else to do it if I can’t. It’s hardly rocket science.

Pedant. 😉

Batteries are easy for me to replace in a small device. Not so much a car. So you might pay to have your phone battery replaced and I might pay to have my car battery replaced. Or the oil changed or whatever. See how that works?

It’s not unreasonable to need a computer less than 10 years old to run the latest apps though, surely? And I think the latest iPad software is supported up to about 6 years old. Pretty fair when you consider a lot of stuff still runs on the previous couple of versions too.

So the 99% get it done by a repair shop. I’ve happily swapped out batteries in all sorts of tech. My car on the other hand has always gone to a mechanic who I’ve paid to do jobs other people may choose to do themselves. Do you have issues with people being gainfully employed in service industries?

How many phones are still in warranty when their battery is worn out? Rechargeable batteries have a lifespan and can usually be replaced, it just needs to be done properly.

No but they’re reasonably water resistant, thinner, lighter, safer and with higher battery capacity to support the features people actually want. And can still have their batteries replaced with a little more effort. So swings and roundabouts I guess.

Current macOS can be installed on MacBook Pros from 2019 onwards, that seems reasonable to me. Though I’m using a 9 year old iMac running an 8 year old OS that still supports everything I need so it’s not like you have to have the latest software.

You can run the latest iOS on an iPhone 11 released in 2019. I’m not sure an awful lot of the market is interested in keeping their phone for more than 7 years.

I just updated my aunty’s 6 year old iPad to the latest OS, that seems pretty decent to me.

No, they seal them to keep phones light, thin, water resistant and safe even as battery capacity gets higher. The trade off is that the battery needs to be replaced by a repair technician with proper tools or at least a competent amateur.

That’s kind of how all technology works. 🤷🏼‍♀️ If software is to continue to evolve, after a time your old device will no longer have the processing power to handle it. And to be honest Apple devices tend to support updates longer than Microsoft or Android ones.

Yes, agreed. I’m just so sick of their endless parade of aggrieved cafe owners and hairdressers and whatnot. Which to be fair is Murdoch standard tactics they brought with them.
