“I gave you the sleeping tonic, remember?” Why was he saying it so kindly? So patiently? Didn't he understand? Something was wrong. “No… No it’s not— that’s not— Oh…” Tendrils of drowsiness pulled on him, making him heavier and heavier with each second. “Ferdinand,” he breathed. “I can't keep my eyes open.” “That's alright.” Ferdinand spoke into his hair. “I'm right here.” No. He was going to fall asleep, and all of this would be a dream, and Ferdinand would be gone, and Hubert would wake up in that horrible cell with new scars and stitches. “Don't let them take me,” he begged. He felt Ferdinand's hands on his back, pulling him close to him. “Never,” he whispered. Hubert drank him in. Every detail he could get before he was gone. His eyes kept closing, but with great strength he kept opening them. The Spy Master in him was long gone at this point. The terror had settled in, replacing the Spy Master with nothing but a terrified animal. “Please don't leave me.”

“I’m here. I’m alive,” Ferdinand reassured. Still so gentle. Still so patient. “I can't lose you again,” he whimpered. “You haven't. When you wake up, I’ll be right here.” “Promise?” “I promise.” “Ferdie…” He let out a weak sob. Desperation and terror clawed at him, but the call to sleep made his mind impossible to sort into submission. Nothing mattered anymore except feeling Ferdinand’s warm breath against his brow. His warm hands in his hair. The vibrations of his voice seeping into Hubert's cold chest. “I have you. I will stay right here, and you’ll rest, and when you wake up, I’ll tell you good morning, and we’ll make you some cinnamon tea, and everything will be alright,” Ferdinand whispered. “Your adjutant will keep watch.” And before he could say anything else, or Hubert could reply, Hubert's eyes fluttered closed and his breath evened out in heavy sleep.

sometimes your ill and can't sleep, but it's so important you do, so you ask your best friend to drug you

Fave books I've read this year so far: Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff and Sorcery & Small Magics by Maiga Doocy. Pretty enamoured with the Fairy Loot edition I managed to find on eBay for the latter 🥰 Highly recommend both of these books!
