I have made these designs available on my website. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of any items in the rainbow crosswalk collection will go to benefit one of the organizations that supports the queer community in Houston. I will name the organization when I have final details worked out.
The slide includes recreations of the rainbow crosswalk designs found in 12 cities throughout the US, including Houston, Orlando, Phoenix, Yakima, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Long Beach, Nashville, Philadelphia, Bend, Kansas City, and Lexington.
I also got the idea that I should feature other cities, and when I started researching them, I found that so many cities across the country had unique designs to their rainbow crosswalks that I wanted to recognize as many of them as I could. Some of these cities surprised me.
I am standing on the corner of Westheimer and Taft in Houston, with my back turn toward the Rainbow crosswalk, wearing a shirt that includes a design that commemorates the same crosswalks. It also includes the text: Welcome to the Gayborhood, Montrose, HTX
When I don't know what to do, I create something. I created this first design, on the shirt that I wore when I got my last glimpse of the crosswalks before they were removed, to remember them in the neighborhood that they called home.
First and foremost, I am heartbroken over the removal of the Rainbow crosswalks in Houston. They were such an important piece of public art that signaled welcoming and acceptance and respect.
I had a bit of a life reset over the last few months so I haven't been around, but I think I found my feet again and I'm fired up about some stuff, so I'm here.
