How MAGA Used Problematic Research From Brazil To Push False Covid Cures When research didn’t support Trump’s pandemic “game changer” claims in 2020, his administration went to Brazil. Today, Trump’s “gold standard” anti-science HHS mirrors Bolsonaro's.

Today @americansunlight.org published a report we've been working on all fall, detailing the worrisome connections and quack science in the MAHA movement, the Bolsonaro health ministry's failed COVID policies and President Trump's "gold standard" HHS: americansunlight.substack.com/p/how-maga-u...

🫵🏻 Are you a data visualization specialist who wants to make a difference in the current US political environment? The American Sunlight Project needs you!

📈 We're looking for someone to help us on a volunteer or low-bono basis (I wish we could pay you the big bucks, but funding is limited) to create an interactive, web-based visualization of a small, democracy-related dataset we've been collecting. Time frame: early 2026.

👀 This project would be ideal for someone who wants to contribute to ASP's mission of increasting the cost of lies that undermine democracy while growing their public portfolio.

☀️ To learn more or put your name forward, send your CV and a link to your portfolio to contact@americansunlight.org.

A pro-Russian content aggregation network, Pravda, appears to be set up to flood large-language models with pro-Kremlin content, The American Sunlight Project has found.

Over the past several months, ASP researchers have investigated 108 new domains and subdomains belonging to the Pravda network, a previously-established ecosystem of largely identical, automated web pages that previously targeted many countries in Europe as well as Africa and Asia with pro-Russia narratives about the war in Ukraine. ASP’s research, in combination with that of other organizations including France’s VIGINUM, brings the total number of associated domains and subdomains to 182. The network’s older targets largely consisted of states belonging to or aligned with the West.

Notably, this latest expansion includes many countries in Africa, the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and North America. It also includes entities other than countries as targets, specifically non-sovereign nations, international organizations, languages, and prominent heads of state. The top objective of the network appears to be duplicating as much pro-Russia content as widely as possible. With one click, a single article could be autotranslated and autoshared with dozens of other sites that appear to target hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

ASP researchers also believe the network may have been custom-built to flood large language models with pro-Russia content. The network is unfriendly to human users; sites within the network boast no search function, poor formatting, and unreliable scrolling, among other usability issues. This final finding poses foundational implications for the intersection of disinformation and artificial intelligence (AI), which threaten to turbocharge highly automated, global information operations in the future.

What struck me about Illia’s analysis is how familiar this tactic has become to the United States in such a short time; this sort of lawfare is being used by the MAGA movement to great success, particularly against disinformation researchers.

Proud to publish this piece from my former student, who writes that Russia's lawfare in the European Court of Human Rights is "transforming [it] into an unwitting accomplice in one of the most sophisticated disinformation operations of the modern era.”
