Latest preprint from the lab is also the first data paper from @emderrick.bsky.social !

We asked if an experimentally applied selective pressure (the herbicide Roundup) causes genome-wide or gene-specific sweeps in aquatic bacteria in a semi-natural (mesocosm) context.

“One Health: Urban birds peck up resistant pathogens”

I’ll take the blame for the punny title.

Credit for anything good in this little Dispatch piece goes to @emderrick.bsky.social !

New from super student Sana Naderi!

The punch line: deer have high within-host viral diversity compared to humans, cats, dogs, or minks.

This is likely due to larger viral populations sizes or more chronic infections, which could explain the rapid viral evolution seen previously in deer.

Ever wonder if V. cholerae loses genetic diversity due to bottlenecks as it passes through the gut?

We have a little preprint about that!

The answer, based on sequencing 200 genomes from 10 patients’ vomit and stool, is: maybe a little but not much!

Happy to see my new paper with @bjesseshapiro.bsky.social published! www.nature.com/articles/s41....

Bonus of this great News and Views article that was a surprise to us both: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Along with our own blog post on the topic where we summarize the work: tinyurl.com/34r87kr9

Pervasive selective sweeps across human gut microbiomes bioRxiv - the preprint server for biology, operated by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a research and educational institution

I'm so excited to share this new paper (with my great advisor @nanditagarud.bsky.social), on selective sweeps in gut bacteria. In this long thread, I’m going to go over our results, but I also want to highlight some of the incredible work that set the stage for us
