🪲 🪱 🌳 WSL researchers sampled tree holes in France, Brazil and India and found that spatial structuring explained #macroinvertebrate diversity better than local conditions, highlighting the importance of connectivity and old-growth forests for conservation. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

The final chapter of my PhD thesis was now published in Limnology and Oceanography! It was one of those manuscripts that took a bit longer, but I am extremely happy it's finally out!

If you are planning to remove your garden pond, consider contacting someone who is an expert and can help with the remaining animals and move them into another pond. 5/5
This example just shows that garden ponds can be extremely important for dragonflies, and that one should never underestimate the potential of a garden pond as a habitat harbouring a large number of individuals. 4/n
These were all moved to two other garden ponds (many thanks to those offering their garden ponds as a refuge!). There are probably still a few larvae left, so a colleague will take over and help on Monday. 3/n
I was called yesterday and asked if I could check this pond before it gets drained, so I took some equipment and started collecting larvae around 10:30. After ca. 1:15 h, I managed to collect 146 Aeshna cyanea larvae, a common frog (Rana temporaria) and two great pond snails (Lymnea stagnalis). 2/n
146: The number of Aeshna cyanea larvae (🇬🇧Southern Hawker, 🇩🇪 Blaugrüne-Mosaikjungfer, 🇭🇷 Modri kralj) I found today in a garden pond which is about to be removed. 1/n

PhD opportunity!
Focusing on ecological processes offers an adaptive approach to conservation at a time of rapid environmental change
But how do we measure & conserve these processes?
This PhD will explore the use of species traits to assess ecosystem condition
